Menendez's Republican challenger: 'I'm offended' by senator's actions
Newark Star-Ledger ^ | February 13, 2018 | Brent Johnson

Republican Bob Hugin wasted little time Tuesday in attacking U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, the Democrat he's aiming to topple in this year's Senate race in New Jersey.

"This campaign is going to be a contrast -- a stark contrast in candidates," Hugin, a multimillionaire former pharmaceutical executive, said minutes after formally announcing his bid for the seat currently held by Menendez, a two-term senator who recently saw federal corruption charges against him dropped.

"I am offended by Senator Menendez's actions," Hugin, 63, told the crowd at the Springfield Elks Lodge. "He's violated the public trust and, at the same time, he's failed the people of New Jersey."

"New Jersey deserves better," he continued. "I'm embarrassed about how people think about New Jersey based on Senator Menendez's behavior. It's embarrassing."

How about “He’s a lying, corrupt, POS thief and needs to be removed from office.”

Wouldn’t you love to hear a GOP candidate say that for once...

I’m so embarrassed of New Jersey I’d like to tow it out to sea.

Menendez was indicted because he stood up to Obama on Cuba and on Israel. The Republican has a tough road to hoe.

“...The Republican has a tough road to hoe...”

Yeah, I know... especially with that psycho that just got elected governor, Murphy. NJ can’t get a break from the freak show, and it’s a damned shame.

Even though our state is hopelessly corrupt and liberal, the GOP candidate will always pull 43/44 in a statewide election. The road is indeed steep, but Murphy has gone off the deep end quicker than anyone anticipated, Menendez is corrupt as hell and Hugin has millions. There’s a chance, maybe 25% max that Hugin could win this with maybe 51% or even a plurality of the vote if one or several independent kooks decides to run.

“...Menendez was indicted because he stood up to Obama...”

Sort of like what happened with that crooked POS Seth Williams over in Philly.

He went after AG Kathleen Kane and the party roasted him and threw him to the wolves.

Menendez is corrupt as hell

Saying it doesn't make it so. He was accused of taking bribes from a supposed friend in the form of airplane rides and vacations. Pretty thin gruel if you ask me.

What other corruption has the guy been accused of? Tell me. I don't know.

I want to see him fly in a dominican woman to a campaign event who was an underage girl when bob was doing her. That would be fun.

Trump would do that, yes...

Your average, typical GOP’er.... not so much. No balls. Doesn’t understand how to street fight.

Or is too afraid of “offending” the other side.

I still crack up when I see that picture of Slick Willy Clinton at the debate when Trump brought in some of Clinton’s victims...

Priceless.

I still remember the blowback from Florio, I think the state legislature wound up being 2/3’s Republican thanks to him, and not all that long ago.

So this may be another perfect storm. While the rest of the country may think Menendez is some character from a Mafia movie, the people in NJ at least know who he is and how corrupt he is. So if this “Florio on Steriods” guy really kicks things up, Menendez will be right in the sites of those who are unhappy.

Menendez wasn’t acquitted; the case ended in a hung jury. The “supposed friend” is in jail for Medicare fraud.

I don’t understand how a state that elects a pro-life tax-cutter like Christie TWICE still sends Cory Booker and Bob Menendez to the Senate. I know NOBODY who would support both sides of this issue (Christie for governor and either token for Senate).

As long as we have two Dem senators, there is no reason for the Republicans in control of the federal government to give NJ a second thought. CA and NY are also learning this the hard way; there is no reason to craft laws beneficial or acceptable to these “Red” states.

Your reply strikes me as what a typical liberal might say in answer to the question I asked. That is it has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE QUESTION.

here is a portion

Headline in paper is “Expect messy fight for Menendez seat”

One thing is certain: This race is going to be an ugly contest.
Hugin, now
retired from Celgene, told Republicans that he’s ready to spend $20 million of his own money on this campaign, and raise millions more friends. So, brace yourself for 30-second spots reminding us that Menendez flew on private jets to luxury resorts in the Caribbean and stayed at fancy hotels in Paris, all free of charge, and then somehow forgot to list mention them on his disclosure forms.
We’ll hear all about the favors he did for the man who paid the bills, Salomon Melgen, a dear friend of Menendez who is now awaiting sentencing on felony fraud charges.
But a campaign like that, based on attacking Menendez’s ethics, won’t work if voters feel that Hugin’s ethics are rotten, too. And this fraud settlement put that question in play.

Florida doctor facing long Medicare fraud sentence
By TERRY SPENCER Associated Press

February 22, 2018 02:08 AM

Updated 7 hours 21 minutes ago
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.

A federal judge is likely to sentence a prominent Florida eye doctor once accused of bribing Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey to about two decades in prison Thursday for stealing $73 million from Medicare by convincing elderly patients to undergo excruciating tests and treatments they didn’t need for diseases they didn’t have.
