It’s all a setup. The believer is already predisposed to believe the number and be emotionally attached to the information as truth. When contradicted, the believer is now being attacked, which prompts responses like ‘one is too many!’, ‘stop pretending this is normal!’ or ‘well what number of school shootings is acceptable for you?’
Instead of dismissing the claim with facts, approach the claim with empathy and direct the focus to the actual failings. In this case, the shooter should have been pursued by the FBI, or at least the local cops, in other cases, shooters were known threats, sometimes they sought treatment and were refused, etc...
Summary:
- Three drive-bys, a fight between adults near the school, and a robbery well after the school day: 5
- University shootings (one negligent, two drive-by, and one drunken fight): 4
- Suicides at a school or building that used to be a school: 2
- Negligent discharges at a school: 2
- Shots fired with no indication that they were intended to hit anyone: 2
- Real school shootings: 3
Near our church, there is a community center that used to be a school. (The school moved up the street.) If, God forbid, someone shoots himself (herself) or gets shot there, by the left’s standards, that’s a school shooting.
