Colorado Considers ‘Purple Card’ As Its Own Version Of The ‘Green Card’

Colorado Considers ‘Purple Card’ As Its Own Version Of The ‘Green Card’
February 13, 2018 at 11:59 pm

Colorado would have it’s own version of a “green card” under legislation at the state capitol.

It would be called a “purple card.”

Some state lawmakers say if Congress won’t reform the immigration system, they will. Their bill would allow anyone who has paid state taxes for at least two years and hasn’t had a felony in three years to be eligible for legal status.

...

Omar Gomez is leading the purple card movement, which he says is good for everyone.

“It benefits the state because they know who’s working where, and we know for sure they’re paying taxes,” Gomez said.

Rep. Dan Pabon, the bill’s sponsor, says the state has to step in.

“The alternative is two-fold. One, you’re either going to be relying on the social safety net that is going to have a lot of people asking for food banks and all these other things; or you’re going to have folks who are still going to work, but just work in the black market and neither of those is acceptable policy for us in Colorado.”

The bill would make Colorado the first state in the country with its own legal work permit.

Rep. Patrick Neville says with good reason.

“Because it’s unconstitutional. It’s against federal law. We’re a nation of laws and this is nothing more than them politically pandering to those here illegally,” he said.

Gov. John Hickenlooper also has concerns.

“I think a purple card has a lot of problems, or there would be a lot details to work out.”

He says the state may be better to enforce current laws.

Amazing how many people, including elected officials, are willing the be anti-Constitution and anti-rule of law just to protect foreign nationals in the country illegally.

Like an armed robbery, rape or a murder?................

Trump has been very patient here, probably because he can’t trust the courts yet, if ever.

Remember, when AZ passed a law that would match the existing Federal immigration laws, Obama/Holder launched a legal assault to establish the primacy of the Federal Government and the Executive in immigration enforcement (or the lack there of, Obama’s chosen immigration enforcement level Zero).

Right now I am in a conundrum.

Pay off my current house in Colorado

Sell off my House in Colorado and move back to my hometown in an actual Red State.

So tempting to just sell off my more expensive house and buy a much cheaper house and pay it off at the same time...

So for the last 12 years we’ve been told that immigration and whose a citizen is PURELY a federal issue and states have no authority.

Now, suddenly, it’s purely a state issue and the federal government has no authority?

Progressives - laws only mean what they want them to mean at that point in time.

I don’t think Colorado has standing to do that per the Constitution.

I would get out of Colorado. It’s almost as bad now as CA.
We fled Northern CA for SC and have never had a moment of regret.
Good luck with whatever decision you make.

No felonies for three whole YEARS is a lot to ask. Guys have needs after all.

They will probably settle for no felony convictions for three years or less - as long as there is robust waiver process, with lots of loopholes.

AZ was not allowed to enforce federal immigration laws, but Colorado can make up their own?

Colorado is one of the states where a person can point to the fact that the wet back vote actually has changed the political map.

Greely is one example for my proof.

True and its a big waste of time. ICE will happily chop up the cards and deport them. Any employer who accepts the card as proof of eligibility will be fined and or prosecuted.

What about a state setting up their own borders and requiring State ID to enter?

Is the ability to travel state-to-state without border controls a Constiutional requirement, or just a habit.

I’m thinking if FedGov can’t enforce borders maybe some other state should. Stop every car driving into Wyoming, require Wyoming specific ID to enter the state. Drivers licenses from other states, possibly not good enough?

Nullificaiton CAN go both ways, it just hasn’t yet, but it will.
