I’m sure Bernstein still carries a big cancerous chip on his shoulder from the immediate post-Watergate glory. Woodward bought a house on the ultra-exclusive Gibson Island on the Chesapeake Bay in Anne Arundel County east of DC. The island is accessed by a causeway that terminates in a guardhouse manned 24/7/365 and you don’t get on without being a resident or pre-announced guest of a resident. The island features the Gibson Island Club with clubhouse restaurant, tennis courts, nine hole golf course, and a large deep water marina. Houses range from frame cottages built in the early 20th century to mid-century brick ranchers and later comtemporaries. Many of the lots are water-front and many inland lots have views of the Bay and the river. Even in the mid-70’s, the most modest un-updated frame cottage on a small inland lot would run you north of $300,000. So Woodward bought and was granted club membership. Bernstein looked at houses and was told that of course he could buy there but would never be a club member. Something about restrictive covenants. Although Woodward was a stinking lib, he was a naval officer and more than a few high ranking retired naval officers lived there. Had in=laws who lived there in the late ‘70’s and one of the young ones had some firearms. We used to go to the dump in the center of the island at night and shoot rats with AR15’s (.223). Some of the near neighbors got upset.
