Los Angeles Times owner will sell paper, ending a long-troubled relationship

The Chicago-based owner of the Los Angeles Times is expected to announce it is selling the newspaper, according to people familiar with the company’s plans, in a surprise move that probably spells the end of its long-troubled relationship with Southern California’s leading news outlet.

The past few months have been particularly chaotic at the Times, with rapid turnover in the paper’s top ranks and a major clash between management and journalists over a proposal to have more non-staffers contributing more news content.

The paper’s future has been clouded since Tribune Co. filed for bankruptcy court protection in 2008. Although the company eventually emerged from bankruptcy in 2012, the Times has shriveled. Its news staff has been pared to about 400 from more than 1,300 at its peak in the late 1990s.

The paper’s journalists voted overwhelmingly last month to form a union.

If Bezos buys it, things won't be looking up.

From the article: The buyer is Patrick Soon-Shiong, a Los Angeles-area physician and a major shareholder of the paper’s current parent company, Tronc ... Soon-Shiong is the billionaire founder and chief executive of NantHealth, based in Culver City.

In summary: The rag is another "rich boy toy." Soon-Shiong is a smart dude who has made a lot of money in several tech areas, most related to healthcare. He has been the Donald's friend for a long time.

Maybe he can kick start the paper by investigating and exposing the fraud and criminality of the Democrats throughout the State.

It’s a disgusting hypocritical rag. We buy it daily for grandma because she expects it and has Alzheimer’s.

Its only remaining asset is the hidden Obama-Khalidi Jew-bashing tape.

Well, SOMEONE, needs to contribute “news content,” because no one seems to be doing it now.

Oh good. Sure the LA Times and its journalists will stay always the same, independent, free, fair minded and neutral with any new owner, even a pro-Trump one.
Do I need to add “/sarc” ?

I used to have an old copy in the garage ten years ago but my wife lined the cat box with it.

Will they release the 1994 Obama Rashid Khalidi video to mark the occasion?

Indeed. I question people’s mental fitness for buying these rags. Reading them should be part of Alzeimer diagnosis

I always put the sports or real estate sections on top when I section the paper out for her. She loves to read aloud (totally out of context as in “Wow, (Yaelle,) he did it four times!” (Who did what...) or show me great photos. But eventually she will start to read to me from the front page, where she assumes Trump is a horrible President (sooooo sadddddd, she was a staunch conservative, but she has the judgment of a three year old now), and I forbid her to read that section to me, telling her that the entire front page section is a lie. The only true thing in there is the ad for tires, and maybe they aren’t really 20% off either.
