Any interesting passengers?
Would you fly on an airplane piloted by the United States Post Office?
Reminds me of an old Dick Cavett joke. “The trains are rolling again. One rolled down an embankment this morning.”
Amtrak needs to be scrapped. I would be OK with not subsidizing north east commuters anymore.
My hypothesis #1: Something on the track engineer saw and started to slow but still hit. Hit caused bumping and jarring that broke hitch, momentum allowed back car to stay close enough after hitch broke and engine continued breaking to allow air hoses to stay connected.
My hypothesis #2: Engineer was sufficiently alert that at the first sign/sound/jarring of a problem he immediately started breaking and allowed back car to stay sufficiently close.
Once is an accident
Twice is a coincidence
Three times is enemy action
That's the mental image it gave me. Lousy writing.
Atlas Shrugged.
That a wonderful and relevant question. Hell NO!! I wouldn’t get on an amtrack train with a gun to my head. What a colossal fiasco. This has gone on for decades and needs to stop. The carnage is unreal.
“broke apart”?
Did anyone one else read the headline and think “My god, what a disaster! There must be many deaths” - only to read that it really DIDN’T break apart.
It suffered a major mechanical breakdown - but the train didn’t go off the tracks and thankfully, no one was killed or injured.
The people who write these stories need to work a bit harder at phrasing the headlines properly.
(Corrected quote:)
Once is an accident. Twice is a coincidence. Three times is an enemy action.
(Taken from Ian Fleming’s novel Goldfinger)
Chains would be almost useless.
In order to work they would have to be so thick they would be nearly impossible to attach because of the weight.
Atlas Shrugged.
I don't know but you'd think there's some sort of electronic sensors connected front to back to alert the engineer. Of course if the air hoses stayed in tact maybe the electrical connections stayed in tact as well.
DO you think we can go from this decrepit Amtrak junk to the Elon Musk high speed hyper-loopy things or whatever? A bit of a stretch?
Nope. I don’t think high speed ground transportation is worth it. Frankly, I think we really will see a lot more airborne options for all sorts of transport.
Breaking or braking? They are two different things.
From the picture, it is not a standard knuckle coupler joining the car. As the article states, the Acela cars are in a “set”, that is more of less permanently joined. In this case not so permanently.
If a train, traveling 125 mph, leaves Point A at eleven o’clock, breaks into two parts at noon...how many passengers arrive at Point B by one o’clock?
Again?
