Reed College leaders have agreed to revise a mandatory freshman humanities course focused on the Western Canon in the wake of a protracted student protest campaign against the class that decried it as too Caucasoid and Eurocentric.

But Reed College on the list of debt-bubble fed colleges which will die during the next economic downturn.
Their African Studies classes were a bit too afrocentric for my liking as well.
??? It’s WESTERN CIV! How can it not be Eurocentric?
My daughter is a freshman in HS, and an honor student.
That said, she thought Abraham Lincoln had something to do with the fall of the Soviet Union...
McEducations...
When I went to college they did not allow students to make-up words.
My friend’s son, a very bright kid, thought that the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise was named after the TV starship and not vice-versa.
We all know that the Civil War and America was for slavery and that it took Ferris Bueller and black people to fight the south for the white people that refused to fight so that Abraham Lincoln could sign the declaration of independence and tear down the Berliner Wall.
LOL...
Oh man, my kids tell me stories about their school, just shockingly stupid. They go to one of the worst schools in the state, nation for drop outs...a drop out factory.
I kind of like them seeing the REAL world. It will only get better for them once they leave. Meanwhile, I went to a lilly white private school and lived a sheltered life until I hit reality.
Uh, it’s called ‘Western Civilization’ for a reason.
Not African Civ or Asian Civ..................
Caucasoid? Do we still use that word as it seems that we have taken negroid off the acceptable list at the request of the the celestial word police. And God forbid anyone who refers to colored people other than the only authorized entity with permission to do so - the NAACP
So they're going to replace Machiavelli w/ what?
So they're going to replace Shakespeare w/ what?
So they're going to replace Locke w/ what?
At my alma mater Occidental College, they got around that by simply calling it the History of Civilization, or "Civ." It included a heavy emphasis on Chinese and Japanese civilization but also a unit on sub-Saharan Africa. I quickly came to the conclusion that sub-Saharan Africa had little to contribute to world civilization. Whenever a civilization arose in that part of the world, it usually took the form of a despotic kingdom or empire that was usually short-lived.
The quality of what we learned also depended on the professor. So our discussion of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's The Sorrows of the Young Werther quicly morphed into an examination of President Nixon's "war crimes" in Cambodia.
In my sophomore year, they got rid of Civ altogether and replaced it with a series of electives that included a class on "Fidel Castro's Revolutionary Socialism."
The further Reed strays from its historic classical (great books) education model, the weaker they become. Even with their leftist focus, they were once a great small college. That is quickly passing. Yet the Trustees continue to be blind to this very obvious shift and will be left wondering (in the next couple of years) why enrollment has plunged. Sad.
So they're going to replace Machiavelli w/ what? Saul Alinsky
So they're going to replace Shakespeare w/ what? Maya Angelou
So they're going to replace Locke w/ what? Eldridge Cleaver
Well, maybe that's because Caucasoid and Eurocentric describe the history of Western Civilization. That's it.
These are the same self-loathing pale-skinned trust fund babies that really believe that being white is shameful.
We need to teach these losers that to the rest of us, calling white people "racist" is the equivalent of calling a black person a "nigger". It is an epithet, and it may provoke a violent reaction.
Kids have heads full of mush. Why should they get to dictate the terms of their education?
What part of Western don’t they understand? The Western part is Europe...
Thanks C19fan.
