Some distant day there will probably be an inclined, slowly spinning circle on Mars.
So people can exercise in 1g gravity.
I like the idea of the enhanced union jack airport designs...runways in so many angles that crosswinds are not that big a deal....takes space and pre-planning though.
Who?
Sure we have all this good quality land just waiting to be used. Just kick all the people living there now out.
Hes not an accountant either.
I recall seeing it in Popular Science or Mechanics when I was a kid.
Make all of the landing gear legs pivot up to about 45 degrees. Then, they could come in with greatly reduced crosswind component. Just think, if the remote cameras attached to the landing gear could give the pilot a good view, he could be prepared of take over if the automatic pilot system malfunctioned.
MORE redundancy: If both the camera system and the automatic pilot fail, the passengers looking out the windows on the approach side can holler out in relay fashion to the cockpit: “Up.... no... uh... down some... umm... up a liiiiiittle.....
Winds do not blow at only 90 degree angles to runways.
I've spent more times than not trying to get on a runway with a 20 degree crosswind blowing at ten or fifteen knots, and this in an old aircraft with Conventional gear (tail dragger).
The B-52 bomber has a landing gear that can compensate for crosswinds. It was classified for many years.
I think a figure 8 would be better.
Okay, how about this:
A square, multiple runway pattern, think strips, mounted on a giant turntable that can be rotated so that runways are parallel to the winds. I assume you pilots would like a headwind on landing..........................
