FWIW, ICE distinguishes between:

Illegal aliens: foreigners whose presence in the USA is in violation of our immigration laws. Visa overstayers, border sneaks, etc.

Criminal aliens: foreigners whose presence in the USA is in violation of our immigration laws and who commit or have committed other crimes as well.

Both are subject to deportation.
