Members of Congress Withhold Pay, Donate Salary to Charity During Government Shutdown

Several members of Congress, both Democrat and Republican, have announced that they will either withhold their pay during the government shutdown or will donate their salary during this time to charity.

Republican Congressman Bob Latta shared a letter he sent, demanding that his paycheck be withheld until the government shutdown has ended. Expressing support for the troops and indignation that America’s elected leaders who caused the government impasse are being paid while the military is not, Latta tweeted, “Members of Congress should be paid while 2 million troops are not.”

His letter read, “Dear Mr. Kiko, I have been informed that despite a lapse of appropriations and current government shutdown, members of Congress will continue receiving their salary. Please withhold my pay until an appropriations agreement has taken effect."

Latta represents Ohio’s 5th district. The Buckeye State representative joins several other GOP members of Congress who are either withholding their pay or donating their money. Missouri Congressman Jason Smith announced via video that he will be donating his paycheck to a Missouri charity. “If your government isn't working for you, then your elected officials should not get paid, it's that simple,” he tweeted.

Democratic Rep. John Delaney of Maryland also announced that he will donate his Congressional pay to charity. "I don't think it's right for me to get paid during a government shutdown while my constituents are being furloughed and important and necessary services are being limited or halted all together," Delaney said in a statement. "It's time to be responsible and come together on a bipartisan deal to fund the government" he told press.

It is unclear when the shutdown will end.

Surrrrrrrrre they will.

Get back to me when they HAVE done so.

The list of things I tell my wife I WILL do is as long as the gutters around our house.

Which I told her I WILL clean out before it rains.

That was at least three rains ago.

In the noise.
After all, members of both parties are making far more in insider trading, back bench deals, and the other forms of corruption available to those who have no abilities to earn pay due to real talent or creativity. (Yes, there are exceptions. Very few exceptions.)

Good idea, but never gonna happen. They are self serving people whose only goals are self enrichment and self promotion.

My question is, will the donate their pay out of the goodness of their heart, or just so they can deduct it from their taxes?

Nice gesture but many military will be hurt due to not having enough savings to meet the bills they have - which are often harder to meet when deployed....none of the Congress-critters offering to do this will have problems meeting expenses....

Question: If there is no budget, then how is it that they have any pay to donate?
Answer: It’s all theater.

My conservative GOP congressman, Rep. Gus Bilirakis (Fl-12th) is not taking his salary until the funding issue is resolved. Good for him!

Interested to see if any Demorats do the same, including the senators.

This is so much pandering. If they could afford to give up their entire paycheck to “charity” during a time when they are saying they are not going to get anything, then they don’t need it do they? And at that point all they are doing is dropping their income to the level of the folks that live from paycheck to paycheck. Only they have savings and perks that will see to it they or their families won’t miss a meal.

And if these people can afford to give up their entire paycheck, then I would expect when they start keeping it again they can start a percentage to their charity equal to one monthly paycheck in a year, giving monthly, so they can give that lauded amount to charity on a yearly basis and not skip a beat. Then I might buy your pandering as not being totally disingenuous. And this money you just gave up cannot be recouped on your taxes if it is sincerely given. All of it goes.

A congressman’s salary is what comes through the front door, but the really big bucks come through the back door. It’s how they all mysteriously get rich.

One, I don’t believe that they will donate a dime. And secondly this makes them look good - bet they all take the deduction on their taxes. Change the law so it reads that congress critters don’t get paid during a shutdown, you bunch of gutless turds! No annual budget no paycheck.
