A couple minutes ago, from the live link iowamark posted above:
"Witnesses say they heard dozens of shots being fired"
http://abc27.com/always-on/
Just said they'd be giving updates every 10 minutes or so (local ABC affiliate).

Full press conference to be held at 2pm at Fed Bldg. in H'burg.
Dauphin County DA & US Atty just gave an update w/minimal information.
They said 'no current danger to public' and 'suspect is no longer a threat'.
Asked if any connection to last month's fatal cop shooting, reply was 'well, they were a block apart', emphasis included.

Why not? They had a valid arrest warrant. This wasnt a search. A judge had already found probable cause that a crime had been committed. Its pretty obvious from what happened that they had concerns the suspect might be dangerous. Should they have called the nice bad guy on the phone and asked him pretty please come down to the station?
To: tomkat
reply was 'well, they were a block apart'A Marshall was murdered and whoever said it gave that smart-@$$ reply?!?

Well that is always the real issue, we don’t want LE to shoot first and ask questions later, and kill people who were no threat. By the same token I do not want LE to hesitate when the threat is real and be killed either. Very difficult to balance those two issues.

If what he said is subject to that much difference in interpretation, I call that a communications fail. That person’s boss should have a word with whomever said it.

A couple of additional suggestions: Never hold pressers when you’ve got nothing substantive to say. And use the words “no comment” when needed. Those two words are at least risk for misinterpretation.
