A Republican Star Fallen, Chris Christie Leaves Office

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, whose popularity soared during his first term but then fell from grace, leaves office Tuesday.

The Republican served a term-limited eight years in a majority blue state and spent much of that time in the national limelight as he built a reputation as a "tell-it-like-it-is" politician. But the Bridgegate scandal, a losing campaign for president and a day spent on a closed beach during a government shutdown left him with the lowest approval ratings for any governor in New Jersey history.

In Christie's first year, a YouTube video of a press conference went viral when a columnist asked if the governor's confrontational tone might hamper his ability to get bills passed.

I remember when people here loved him.

That phase didn’t last long. A month or two, maybe.

Keep in touch, Christie.
Your skill set will soon be needed by the GOP.

He was one of the first people to back Trump. For that he gets credit.

He knows how to fit for what’s like. He needs the Attorney General.

Classic example of a moderate Republican that pisses off the base and still gets destroyed by the Left. Now NJ has arguably the most leftist Dem Governor in the country who’ll just blame his failures on Christie.

Because he was all about sound and fury, a tubby idiot RINO signifying nothing (with apologies to Shakespeare).

Christie should have been the AG, he would have prosecuted Holder quicker.

He would be a horrible choice for AG. I trust Trump on this one. He was wise to distance himself from him after the election. Yes, Christie supported him during the campaign but I think he was being an opportunist. Just like he supported Obama when it looked like Romney wasn't going to win.

Gotta disagree you you here. He was good at putting a finger in the wind, attention, and eating doughnuts. He lacked one thing, a conservative weltanschauung and the fortitude to carry it out. He failed.

1. Chris Christie was a Bush loyalist to the core.

2. Christie destroyed any chance he had at a major cabinet position in the days after the infamous "Access Hollywood" tape came out during the campaign last year. Trump was making calls to his inner circle to gauge their loyalty through the ordeal, and Christie didn't answer his phone for days after that.

I'm no fan of Christie, but he didn't "fail" at anything. He was a Republican governor in a state where both houses of the legislature have been controlled by the Democrats for years, and there simply wasn't much he was capable of doing anyway.

I've had this theory that Christie would have preferred not to run for a second term in 2013 anyway -- and that he was lining himself up as the AG nominee if Romney had won in 2012.

He was a Gun Grabber RINO to the core, but he was very entertaining when he was first Elected.

True. Christie was Bush 2000 NJ’s fundraiser.
