“Many are speculating that this sh**hole story was drummed up to distract from Project Veritas bombshell undercover video exposing Twitters tactics to ban people who support Trump.”

Doubtful that 2% of the public ever heard of Project Veritas.
More likely, an attempt to distract from the upcoming FBI-gate $#!tstorm.

They have already crippled my account. They won’t let me post working links on Twitter to some accounts. Quite a few of them.
I simply put a break in link before .com and post it with note to remove break before that.
For a while they did that on DM’s. I used that and other techniques to circumvent it. It happened several year ago. They’ve been doing this for a while.

Misfire. This is and remains subject specific - Trump has systematically undercut the Dem bargaining positions on the immigration issue - this is now convenient to bring out and spread around to try and undercut the President, give cover to dodge responsibility of negotiation failure, and pin the stink of legislative failure on the President. They're trying to out-Trump Trump and gain some fabricated moral high ground PR advantage.
