BOSTON (AP) - A Boston police detective is set to be sentenced Thursday for lying to federal officials so he could take his gun on planes during personal trips and allow a friend to avoid airport security.
Sgt. Detective Bruce Smith faces up to a year of probation under the terms of a plea deal. He has also agreed to resign from the department and pay a $7,500 fine.
The 28-year veteran of the force was charged last year with falsely telling Transportation Security Administration officials that he was on official police business and was authorized to carry his firearm. Prosecutors allege he flew armed on about 28 trips from Bostons Logan International Airport.

Clearly he was justified. There are so many companion dogs flying these days and cops never waste an opportunity to shoot dogs...
But then we have a lot of stupid laws.
“and cops never waste an opportunity to shoot dogs...”
Safe to assume your not a big fan of the Police?
I stay armed and gave up airplanes.
“-———and cops never waste an opportunity to shoot dogs...”
Bull**** !!!!!!!!
.
Not funny. You try being a cop.
You dont need to turn it off to view the article..........
“I stay armed and gave up airplanes.”
Yep. And, states share information about who has a legal CCW, so if your plates are scanned in a state where it is illegal to carry they may stop and search. If I had to go through on of those liberal hell holes, I’d rent a car.
If their scanners can read my plates.
Its a safety issue. The good guys with guns must be known by the crew.
When the first thing they do when coming to a house and before any questions are asked they shoot the family dog. One mayor’s dog ran from the cops went upstairs and hid under a bed. The cop followed and shot the dog under the bed. So no, I am not in favor of cop shooting dogs for no reason.
I’m an FFDO (crew licensed to carry on the flight deck) and get hassled from time to time by the TSA Gestapo; one time I demanded to speak with a supervisor. He gathered my stuff, put it back in the bag and said “Have a nice flight” ... gestured to the agent to follow him back to his office.
The crew knew he was a cop and knew he was carrying.
“In my opinion he was performing a public service. “
On the other hand if a situation did develop he’d probably shoot the wrong person.
Cops who lie should be fired. Oh, good, he was.
24/7/365 - Police do not get paid by the hour. Perhaps “off-duty” shouldn’t respond to emergencies when not actually “on duty”.
Perhaps a request for a new trial would be in order. But in a Federal case... perhaps not.
I have it on good authority that judges and legislators have been known to strap up routinely. At least they used to. At one point in time several prominent congressmen carried into the halls of congress.
“One mayors dog ran from the cops went upstairs and hid under a bed. The cop followed and shot the dog under the bed.”
The cop would have a fine funeral too if done at my house.
“The cop followed and shot the dog under the bed.”
I find that very hard to believe.
