Full title:Run Away, Claire: McCaskill Refuses To Comment On Local Bank Doling Out Bonuses Thanks To Trump’s Tax Bill
Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) is one of the most vulnerable Democrats heading into the 2018 elections. Her state went heavily for Trump, who won it 57/38 over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. It’s possible she could have been voted out in 2012, but was saved when her Republican opponent, Rep. Todd Akin, made the infamous “legitimate rape” gaffe that torched his senate candidacy. Now, as we enter 2018, McCaskill might have to answer for another blunder: voting against the GOP’s tax bill.
Since President Trump signed the bill into law on December 22, over 100 companies have done exactly what Democrats thought they wouldn’t do: give bonuses to workers, increase U.S. investments, and boost donations to charitable causes. They’re eating crow—lots of it. They’re backtracking. They’re moving goal posts because it’s very possible that a) this bill gets more popular; and b) the Democrats will have to explain why they voted against economic growth, a tax cut for the middle class, and the American worker. The wind that they have to their backs could easily dissipate. We are 10 months away from Election Day. In Missouri, the tax bill benefits have hit close to home, with a Springfield-based bank announcing that they would be giving $1,000 and $500 bonuses to full-time and part-time workers respectively thanks to the new bill. The bank cited how the GOP’s tax reform will create a better economic environment. McCaskill was asked for comment, but decided to deploy countermeasures and head into the bunker (via Springfield

I read a couple of pieces earlier that named Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley.
They seemed to think he could beat her because of the Republican support for President Trump.
I know nothing about Missouri politics.
Yes. She is very unpopular in MO. Any Republican with a pulse will beat her (though it’s likely to be Atty Gen Josh Hawley).

I don’t know who will oppose her, but Missouri definitely has some people capable of unseating her if they just keep hammering her and get the Trump supporters to the polls.
Hawley is pretty good. He would wipe her off the map.
Recent MO politics are a bloodbath for liberals. Until recently Missouri was legitimately purple. Now it’s solid red and in 2016 the republicans won *every* executive branch elected position. The governors race was odd; Greitens (republican) was a political newcomer who used to be a democrat. His democrat opponent was Chris Koster, who was once a republican and received the NRA endorsement. Koster always came off as highly conservative especially as a democrat. Greitens won by 6 points. If Koster had been a far lefty he’d have lost by the sort of margins Clinton did against Trump for President in MO.
Claire McCaskill is probably the second biggest jackass in the state. She’s exceeded only by Todd Akin, the only person in Missouri stupid enough to find a way to lose to McCaskill in 2012.
McCaskill is toast in the mid terms. Most any decent republican who can avoid the spectacular verbal gaffes of Akin will beat her. If Hawley runs, he will *annihilate* her at the polls.

Two reasons. The less important one is that MO’s recent swing to hard red was underway in 2012 but not complete. The terrain was not as unfavorable as it is now to liberals.
But the biggest reason is that her opponent was the dumbest person in the entire state. Google “Todd Akin legitimate rape” and you will learn why she won.

You said it. Turn out, turn out, turn out. Democrats are hard to match in turn out measures.
Seems Republican voters are not inclined to overseer tactics, to be whipped, spurred and threatened if they do not walk, crawl or ride to the polls in rain, sleet or snow.
Class of 2006. She lucked out running in a terrible Republican year against a somewhat weak incumbent Senator who had only been in office 4 years (Jim Talent). Talent narrowly beat the (illegally) appointed Democrat Jean Carnahan in 2002, a seat she held onto from after the 2000 elections. Talent, a good Senator, was never able to get a solid hold on the seat, losing to McCaskill 49.6-47.3% (considered “the revenge of the Carnahans”).
McCaskill was first elected statewide as Auditor by a narrow margin in 1998 with just 50%. She was reelected in 2002 with a 60-37% landslide, and then ran for Governor in 2004, defeating the weak Democrat incumbent, “One-Term Bob” Holden, whom the Republicans expected to face, in the Dem primary. She presented a strong challenge, but lost to Republican Matt Blunt in the general that year, losing by just 51-48%. She remained in office as Auditor and was laying the groundwork to run against Talent, defeating him in ‘06.
However, after she was elected and her left-wing record was on full display in a higher-profile job than State Auditor, her disapprovals rose and she became a top target in 2012. She was trailing all Republican challengers. She actually wanted to run against Congressman Todd Akin, a solid Conservative (even though he was leading her). He would’ve beaten her had he not been led into a “gotcha” question on the issue of rape and how that it “rarely results” in pregnancy.
As you may recall, the media went into a feeding frenzy and Akin’s comments were such that Republicans wanted him to drop out of the race, which also got Indiana’s Richard Mourdock ensnared, and two races that were for the taking got snatched away. Akin lost by an embarrassing 16% (55-39%). Had the race been held in early August before the comments, Akin would’ve won by about 52-47% or thereabouts. So, she was saved entirely by the fact her opponent managed to become more unpopular than she. However, that lasted about 5 minutes, and her high disapprovals returned almost immediately, and the GOP is unlikely to make the same mistake again. In short, McCaskill lucked out on the basis of anti-Republican sentiment, not on personal support. Unless she can paint Trump and her likely opponent Hawley as being massively unpopular in MO, it’s unlikely she can get a third term.
