Just remember, Hillary Clinton traveled all over the entire world pushing her book, “What Happened”...but, even though it sold a good deal of books, it did absolutely nothing good for her. Trump may have started out not WANTING to win, but he HAD to win, once he was engaged. It is all in the competitive spirit, you know, and once he has begun a game, or negotiation, or even a conversation, the desire to best the rivals comes to the forefront.
Trump was reluctant to even place his name out there as a candidate, for YEARS before he finally got serious in 2015. He had considered it from time to time, but it was not yet at the critical mass in his thinking.
But once he had determined he was going into Atlantic City, he proved he could overcome some serious legal obstacles to set up the Trump Plaza and Hotel on the Boardwalk, and not only that, rescue it from bankruptcy, along with the Trump Marina Hotel Casino and the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort. He and his daughter Ivanka negotiated to restructure the debt against these properties, and put them all on a paying proposition.
What others had done before and since, in running them into the ground, was not within the overview of the Trump organization. But given the problems involved, Trump solved them with his own unique way of rebranding and reconstituting the debt structure.
It is absolutely a mistake to think of Donald Trump as “dumb” or “stupid”. He is neither, nor are his children.

Trump seriously considered running for president in previous years. He did not run because his analysis of the situation said he would lose.
Before announcing this time, he again analyzed the situation and came to the conclusion that this time he could win and that is precisely why he announced. Before announcement, he realized a strategy could be devised to build on the Tea Party movement, and on the anti-illegal immigrant movement, and on the massive opposition to political correctness going too far.
All those things that horrified the media were calculated to ridicule political correctness and take advantage of our desire to be relieved of PC police.
Trump loves winning.
