The entire operation was conducted out of Eglin AFB. It was led by Colonel Bull Simons.

He later led a bunch of Ross Perot’s employees out of Iran after the Muzzies took over. It was quite an adventure.

Just curious, can anyone here tell me EXACTLY what the requirements were for either an enlistee or draftee in 1969 to become a member of the special forces?

Specifically: Enlistment period

Periods of training including basic

Was jungle training a portion of that training and was it held in Panama in November 1969?

The reason I ask is because I played softball with a black guy two years ago who is now in prison for impersonating a federal law enforcement official (his second offense after serving 3 years in prison from 2010 - 2013) who always bragged about being a Vietnam vet and was special forces.

None of his claims set well with me since he said he did his jungle training in Panama in Nov of 1969, which was when I arrived there just after turning 19 years of age. At the time he would have been 3 or 2 years younger than me..............Yea, he's a phony but sooner or later he'll get out and I'll see him in softball again.

A true patriot and American hero. Did you know that three POWs were given battlefield commissions as an indirect result of the raid?

Ha, showed up at SWC in 1988 - and did end up the special subject’s team leader at O&I.

1989 was a 1SG in 1st Battalion.

Only knew the CSM from a distance.

As it happens, I was the JFKSWC School Sergeant Major that Joe Murray replaced when I retired on June 1, 1989.

Joe was a good soldier and a good friend. His passing is a loss felt by the entire Special Forces family.

Keep an eye on the perimeter, Joe. We’ll all be along shortly.
