The unseen cost of solar farms on taxpayers in North Carolina (80% tax abatement 2 companies)

WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) – There is growing concern in some counties about how much solar farms are actually costing taxpayers.

Under North Carolina law, counties must give solar companies an 80 tax abatement. For smaller counties like Beaufort, that equates to around a $543,000 tax loss each year.

A planned 600 acre solar farm in the county threatens to bring the total tax lost to well over $1 million a year. The more solar farms a county has, the greater that number.

“Our taxpayers here are paying for that tax abatement, and they’re also paying for an increase in energy cost,” said Beaufort County Commissioner Ron Buzzeo.

$$$ Kaching!

Will the feds do the same thing? Has anyone in the military noticed that the greenies are no longer in power and boots are being bought instead?

Letting someone keep more of their own money is never a “cost”.

Except in the eyes of liberals and Never Trumpsters, who are just liberals posing as semi conservatives.

These “solar farms” are all over my county. They are an appalling eyesore where nothings grows, nothing lives.

Another example of the government goliath forcing itself on the little people and enriching a few. The Soviets would be proud.

The feds and our local state game department are good at doing this as well. They buy up rural wilderness property from the ranchers and convert them to public use. The only tax revenue is from the the purchase and sale, after that they are taken off the tax rolls. Then they renege on the Payment In Lieu of Taxes agreement (PILT) and then force the county to renovate it. I was the County Engineer where this occurred and it was still unresolved for the 4 years I was there.

So, cut your county's spending by the half million or million, starting with employment of nonessential personnel. Provide the services that are needed, eliminate the "nice to have but we can live without" ones. Let the patrons of the "arts" PAY for the "arts".

And then do away with the subsidies to wind, solar, etc. Let 'em stand or fall on their own merit. Presto! You're a half million or million to the good, and can cut taxes! Win-win!

How is letting someone keep more of their own money a “subsidy”. It’s just a penalty on those who pay the higher taxes.

The Statists choosing winners & losers is ALWAYS a cost. Sorry that you don’t understand that. Everybody competing on an equal footing always delivers the most wealth & prosperity.

The Trump admin just put a punitive tariff on imported solar panels to benefit the one or two foreign owned domestic manufacturers.

Solar panels are about to get much more expensive so the amount of tax subsidies will grow. But hey at least we are creating good jobs right here in America.

You have zero understanding of what subsidies are. Or perhaps you’re simply a subsidy “taker”?

Again, that just means those having more of their own money being confiscated are being penalized.

It isn't. The subsidies and higher electrical rates are a cost.

"Or perhaps you’re simply a subsidy “taker”?"

These people arn't "taking" - they are keeping more of their own money.

"It isn't. The subsidies and higher electrical rates are a cost."

If that's the case then letting anyone keep any of their own money is a "cost".

Driving around the eastern part of NC last year, I was surprised at the number of solar farms that had sprung up everywhere. This foolishness must be why.

When the subsidy dries up, they'll simply be very expensive dust attractors....

What in the world does that mean? Forcing taxpayers to underwrite a "private business" and use their higher priced product is a subsidy. If those solar farms had to compete head to head with cheaper coal or nat gas they wouldn't ever exist.

Taxpayers aren’t “underwriting” anything - the article doesn’t indicate that this business received anything from taxpayers. They just kept more of their own money.

"What in the world does that mean?"

because calling lower taxes a cost is based on the assumption that the government is entitled to all your money and any they let you keep is a "cost". How else does lower taxes equate to a "cost"?
