Celebrating a major shift in cultural attitudes about cannabis — or just looking to enjoy the right to get high without legal entanglements — Californians lined up at dispensaries up and down the state Monday morning to be among the first to purchase recreational cannabis, more than a year after voters passed Prop. 64.
In the pre-dawn darkness at KindPeoples collective in Santa Cruz, a line of 80 people snaked around the building before doors opened. The first sale – a eighth of a gram of indica flower called ‘Nine Pound Hammer’ – was made, to resounding applause, to UC-Santa Cruz professor of Sociology and Legal Studies emeritus Craig Reinarman, 69,whose research has focused on drug policy in America.
“It feels great. It is long overdue,” Reinarman said. “Cannabis prohibition was conceived in fraud, spread by racist fears full of misinformation and myths. And now the law is finally catching up with the culture and people.”

What was historic was the decades long failed drug war, costing billions in tax dollars which only increased the size and scope of government and law enforcement in every direction, and put tens of thousands of people in cages for pot.
I live in California. The condos I live in are mostly rented out to working class blue collar workers. I own my condo and am scared that long term my neighborhood is going to be devastated by the use of pot and by extension the other drugs that tend to show up in neighborhoods with heavy recreational pot use.

So, the over-taxed, non-profitable businesses still left in CASE now face workers, executives and drivers and operators trying to shake off last night’s “mellow” highs? At least alcohol gives your body and mind a punishment for over-drinking.
