Costco in New Orleans is actually on the edge of one of THE most crime ridden neighborhoods near Uptown universities. The company got tons of tax concessions and other incentives to build there. So it was more like social welfare than corporate sense. Sams is on the outskirts of the city, in the suburbs-Kenner and Metairie. Location really doesn’t matter when it comes to the demographics of the N.O. area. It is primarily poor, black and very mobile criminal types. They fill up the Lexus with friends and go ‘shopping’, trashing the stores, returning half eaten food for refunds(which they get-no questions dared) and filling up flats with EBT merchandise. It’s a losing battle. The theft/shoplifting is growing and the enlightened management from more civilized cities think things like SELF checkout will help.Trusting thieves always works, right? For the life of me I don’t know why ANYONE bothers to pay-just walk out with what you want. What if an entire store full of people did that? They won’t confront/chase thieves now, how could they stop hundreds at a time? Then there is the added ‘atmosphere’ of trash people letting their kids actually defecate in the middle of aisles or dragging them around telling them to ‘shut the F... up! When the demographics are against you all you can do is shop online and hope those who created the ‘food deserts’ enjoy them.

Of course, if the mediots actually reported that Black youths were causing the vast majority of these mall riot problems, the Rev-uh-runds Al Sharptoon and Je$$e Jack$on would be on them like — uh — white on rice.

I’m old enough to remember when Orange Julius would add a raw egg to your drink. That practice ended because of the risk of eating raw egg. But I’d rather eat a millionaire raw eggs than go to a mall infested with ferals. Which is the riskier practice?

I went to a mall several years ago, and the former Spencer's Gifts was converted into a pan-African clothing and art store.

Two years ago, niteowl77 wanted to go to a specialty store that had supposedly opened up adjacent to a mall where we used to go back in the 1980s. This particular mall was usually packed back in those days, partly because it had a good number of businesses that were either regional or local and were managed by people who knew their stuff; while not "upscale," the mall had some pretensions to same. We moved from the area some years ago, so we had not been there in probably fifteen years.

The store n77 was looking for wasn't there, so we decided to go to the mall since we had already driven over that far. We were surprised to find that it now has shops similar to what you have described, and much of the mall clearly caters to what I will euphemize as "a certain demographic." We figured out pretty quickly that even with the two good anchor stores that remained, this mall was doomed.

A leisurely tour of the town showed that a fair number of the old mall tenants are now in free-standing buildings or strip malls.

"while not upscale..."

That is a huge part of the problem right there. The insistence on opening 'upscale' stores in DOWNscale locations. Just about the only people who can afford 'upscale' now are those who have the necessities paid for by the government and who have lots of illegal cash to spend on fashion and bling. Working people want good, affordable choices-not a mall full of 'upscale', overpriced merchandise. Putting a Tiffany's in the ghetto does not transform the shoppers into cultured consumers. I suppose the thinking is 'upscale makes more money faster' allowing the business to close sooner and cash in on their insurance. Research should tell business owners BEFORE they open that their customer base will not be the 'upscale' types. People with taste for finer things usually have the good sense to shop online and avoid the criminal gauntlet found in malls.

Until we're willing to step into ‘the conversation’ and unequivocally explain to the ‘black community’ that they don't have nice stores because the costs of doing business in the black community is too high - - things will not change.

Commerce rejection has NOTHING to do with skin color and everything to do with rejection of the underclass criminal culture that has taken over much of the black community.

For COSTCO and Sam's to pretend otherwise might make their liberal elite executives feel good about themselves but the unreality presented to the honest people in the black community (people who are trying to pull their communities away from the criminals) is a slap in the face.

A saner approach would be to offer memberships - and if anyone is caught stealing they lose their membership and are given a prorated refund of what they paid. In time this incentive allows the 'winners' to be the honest black citizens and losers to be the criminals. It's a naturally health incentive patterns that in the long run restores sanity to the black community. (Yes, before the great society 'incentives from hell' the black community had stores and commerce)

You speak the truth. Unfortunately long term rewards do not negate immediate retribution. Corporate big wigs make decisions in board rooms and order them implemented in real places filled with real people. Local business people are- rightfully- AFRAID of immediate violence in response to cancelled memberships, apprehension of shoplifters, etc. Kick two thieves out of your store and 'disrespect' them in front of others and their family and friends WILL and DO return to cause havoc-even violence. What's a couple hundred dollars of merchandise compared to that? And that is how business is done in reality as opposed to theory. And the criminals know it and take full advantage.

I'll give you a real example: membership stores, in the N.O. area, are considered discriminatory by the lower class-primarily black-citizenry.They argue public business should be open to the public. Result- major concessions, from free memberships to no checking if the member is the shopper. Anyone can use the card. So 1 person has a card and 10 non-members come in with them.Rules or not, NO ONE is going to cause a scene by denying them as shoppers. Rules are- and have to be-ignored in the face of immediate confrontations. As long as the loss, per store, doesn't exceed a set, expected, limit, managers cut costs elsewhere. Much is hidden from Corporate; and corporate doesn't care as long as it doesn't hurt the bottom line or reach the point where they have to make major changes. (Which, of course, have economic and political repercussions)

Six Flags theme park in N.O. died partially due to the miserable, and dangerous, location but also because a certain amount of free passes had to be given the 'underpriveleged' who took over the park, harassing paying people, and enjoying it all free while others paid $$$. Politics, social 'fairness' and cultural 'sensitivity'cripples business even before it opens.

Because of a few places a year that this happens, that’s absurd.

Dude...this is the nuclear version . It takes nowhere near that much to make people of pallor feel uncomfortable and get scarce,
