Another freeper on another thread that lives near the accident said they spent $80 million for these upgraded tracks, etc. (I think I might have read $180 million somewhere else.)

He also said the designed savings in time was 4 minutes from Seattle to Portland. But earlier dry runs were taking LONGER than the usual route and train - perhaps the reason they were speeding on the publized run.

And all for 77 passengers!

So yes - let’s give MORE money to the government as they are such wise benefactors of our money.

BTW - the government, BECAUSE of the tax cuts, will no doubt bring in more REVENUE just as the tax cuts of Reagan and Bush did.

Jerry Large?

I would think this a nom de plum.

Fat ass sitting in his mother’s basement eating pizza, drinking beer in his underwear watching CNN and msnbc, and smoking dope.

Unfortunately, he can find his way to a precinct and vote on election day.

The Constitution doesn’t require me to support your toy trains. Feel free to buy your own.

you are correct, but how many times in the last couple of years has this sort of stuff happened. Derailment in Philadelphia coupe of years ago due to the same problem as the Cascade train, people died. USS Fitzgerald hit by a plodding containership at night because of the OOD’s inattention or inaction, people died. USS McCain hit by a plodding tanker due to bridge watch personnel not knowing their jobs, and inattention, people died. Common thread, people regardless of the technology available, make mistakes. These mistakes more often than not, cost peoples lives. As far as how we drive cars, look at the number of people killed on our highways every year, how many deaths due to in attention or distraction. If there is a way that a human operator can screw up a system, they probably will.

private sector dumped passenger rail decades ago, they were losing millions on passenger trains. That is why Amtrak was created, without it, there would most likely be no intercity passenger rail.

In the decades prior to WWII there was daily 120 mph passenger train service between NYC and Chicago, pulled by steam locomotives. It required a very high investment in the roadbed. Much higher than what freight service requires.

It was practical and profitable because auto and air travel were not strong rivals. Everyone went by train for long distance travel and the volume of passenger made the capital investment worthwhile.

In the years after WWII the American highway system improved dramatically and so did airline service. The volume of passenger traffic on railroads fell to the point that it no longer made sense for railroads to invest in it, so they abandoned it when they could. The roadbeds that they maintain now are suitable for freight and not the high speed passenger trains of the past.
