A man has been arrested after apparently trying to drive through a base used by the US Air Force in Suffolk.

Shots were fired by US personnel before the man was detained at RAF Mildenhall.

He suffered cuts and bruises and is now in custody of Suffolk Police.

The base was temporarily put into lockdown as police responded to reports of what they called a "significant incident." The incident is not thought to be terror related.

The incident is not thought to be terror related.

Of course, because this statement has been misused so many times, we don't expect anyone with any sense to believe us.

Of course it’s not terror related. After all, who among us hasn’t made a wrong turn, and ended up driving through an air force base?

I might await more info this time before calling it terror. The guy (bloke) has not been identified in detail yet. In England, (or in the U.S. for that matter) it is conceivable that the driver with a pint or two too many, could have made a bad turn and not stopped appropriately at the signal (here, the manned gate).

I have had friends who served at Mildenhall. Let’s hope this is the end of it, for this episode.

RAF Mildenhall is the AMC and contract airline terminal where most USAF personnel enter and exit the UK.

We left High Wycombe in 1965 through RAF Mildenhall when my dad retired from the USAF.

It was the happiest day of my life. I was 16 YO and it was going to be the first time we lived in the CONUS since I was 3 or so.

The Telegraph (UK) is reporting that this was no accident. From the article: “He apparently tried unsuccessfully to bluff his way in and after an altercation tried for force his way through the gate.”

Did many TDYs to RAF Mildenhall supporting the 6988/488IS.

Staggered back to billeting many times from the Bird-in-Hand pub, too! The Smoke House was a longer walk.

Main road goes right thru base, but the work/runway side has posted gate guards/USAF Security Police. Probably tried to turn into the gate.
