Reps. John Lewis (D-Ga.) announced Thursday he wont attend the opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum on Saturday because President Trump will be there.
President Trumps attendance and his hurtful policies are an insult to the people portrayed in this civil rights museum," Lewis said in a joint statement with Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.).
Lewis and Thompson cited Trumps past comments about women, immigrants and NFL players who have protested during the national anthem before games, saying his remarks "disrespect the efforts" of civil rights leaders.
Lewis had previously said he was reconsidering whether to attend after the White House announced Tuesday that Trump would be at the event in Jackson, Miss.
We think its unfortunate that these members of Congress wouldnt join the President in honoring the incredible sacrifice civil rights leaders made to right the injustices in our history," White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.
"The President hopes others will join him in recognizing that the movement was about removing barriers and unifying Americans of all backgrounds.
Lewis has been a frequent critic of Trump and drew the presidents ire in January, before Trump officially took office, after saying he didn't consider him to be a legitimate president."
Trump said on Twitter the congressman should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested).
Lewis, on Wednesday, was one of 58 House Democrats who voted in favor of beginning impeachment proceedings against Trump. The measure overwhelmingly failed in the GOP-lead House.
Lewis was a key civil rights leader in the 1960s as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.
The NAACP, on Tuesday, announced opposition to Trump attending the museum opening, saying he has created a racially hostile climate.

On what do these Pinkos base all these claims of racism?
John Lewis is a hateful and racist GHOUL STILL feeding off the remains of MLK.
The class of the attendees just went up 10%.
Ah...liberals. So tolerant. So inclusive. Such bullshit.
Hey John, don’t go....nobody will notice.
BTW, you speak of these Trump hurtful policies. Please list me just 3 of these so-called Trump policies you speak of.
What, you don’t have any?
What a baby! Stay home then. When that happens, he will complain about being passed over and ignored, probably because he’s black. It’s a circular kind of argument.
Age old advice John, Happiness is the best revenge.
When you allow your ‘enemy’ to push you into a small dark corner, you have given your ‘enemy’ a great amount of power.
Seems Lewis, a legitimate Civil rights hero is only hurting himself here.
So what and who cares?
I refuse to do it.
Not going there.
I won't go check...
Moving right along...
John Lewis always has to be a pathetic attention whore.
Hes going to hold his breath and stomp his feet too.
Wouldn't that be the same mindset of the people in restaurants in the south who didn't want Lewis in the same room with them for 30 minutes?
What goes around, comes around, and now Lewis is the one who won't be in the same room with others?
What a big fat black baby.
He knows he ca’t talk pwain and would be embarrassed to have to speak with the President
I have never seen such childish behavior.
This 12+ month tantrum is getting old.
