Trump signs National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day proclamation
CBS News ^ | 12/7/2017 | Blair Guild

As six Pearl Harbor veterans stood by his side, President Trump signed a presidential proclamation from the White House Thursday recognizing December 7 as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. One of the survivors of the surpise attack, Michael Ganitch, who was also wearing a bright Hawaiian shirt for the occasion, broke out into song with "Remember Pearl Harbor" during the president's remarks.

"What can I say? Wow that was good -- he's a very shy person too," Mr. Trump joked as Ganitch finished the song.

The president praised each of the six veterans as heroes, thanking them for their service and promising to build up the military under his administration. Mr. Trump also called the attacks on Pearl Harbor "a pretty wild scene."

"Today our entire nation pauses to remember Pearl Harbor and the brave warriors who on that day stood tall and fought for America," he said.

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the Japanese aerial attack on the U.S. naval base Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The attack killed more than 2,300 servicemen. In response, the United States and the United Kingdom declared war against Japan the following day. Thursday is the 76th anniversary of the attack.

At the end of the event, a reporter shouted a question about the resignation speech of Sen. Al Franken, D-Minnesota, in which he called out the president for his own sexual assault allegations.

"I, of all people, am aware that there is some irony in the fact that I am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the Oval Office," Franken said on the Senate floor.

Mr. Trump said he didn't hear Franken's speech.

President Trump. Please keep your eyes on Kim Jung Un particularly on this day.
He may think of himself as another Admiral Yamamoto.

Trump needs to sign a “Truth from the FBI and the DOJ to the American People Proclamation” in support of a similar Executive Order.

Thank you, but I do have to mention I am not a vet.

I can’t take any credit or leave any mistaken perceptions having not served in our armed forces.

I appreciate the sentiment though. Nice.

I'm inviting everyone on this solemn day (sorry if you've seen this invite on multiple threads!)to take a look at my son's Eagle Scout project, a 50-minute documentary on USS Arizona survivor and bomber pilot Lou Conter. Over 500 copies have been distributed to schools, military and civilian officials, civic and veterans groups, etc. nationwide, and now its available ad-free on You Tube. It's a great story of an American hero, and includes footage we gathered at last year's 75'th anniversary observances. If the link below doesn't work, you can get the link at witnesstoinfamy.com USS Arizona Survivor Documentary< /a>

It’s quite well done. Congratulations to your son who is helping to educate the public on Pearl Harbor so it is not forgotten.

My mother was saying how at the time Hawaii was not even a state as yet and when she was told by her father what happened said, ‘where’s Hawaii?’ and I asked her why she didn’t know where Hawaii was (so well known to us today). But back then it was not as well known not being a state yet and the base there had no bomber planes, were just attacked and were helpless.

Terrible tragedy and a lesson to us all now, as before this Obama felt it okay to decrease the military making us very vulnerable to other attacks like that one.

Let’s not forget, even if we did not live during that period.

Just this morning, I sent funds (and the precise lettering) for two commemoratory bricks to be installed at the WWII Memorial at New Orleans.

One was in the name of my Dad, who flew PBY-5s in and around Sepik River, New Guinea, and Rabaul Island in the SW-Pacific. Fully engaged mentally, he died in 2014 at the age of 97.

The other engraved brick was for my Dad's co-pilot, Lou Conter!

:)

Was your son the executive producer? And he’s an Eagle Scout? Does he plan on making this a career? Tell him this old Navy Seabee said “Thank you and well done?*

I’m sure you’re a very proud parent. You have every right to be

God bless your late father! These PBY guys were seriously bad ass. You’ll be happy to learn Mr Conter is hale and hearty, having just turned 96. He often travels around the country receiving well-deserved recognitions. When he returns from Pearl Harbor the sheriff will dispatch deputies in full dress uniform to drive him the 80 miles Home. He’s a local celebrities and frequently speaks to schoolchildren and other groups. He’s become a great friend to me and my son. Though he lives some distance we make a point of going to visit at least once a month. We’ll be seeing him the week after Christmas. Please give us your dad’s name and we’ll be happy to remember him to Lou.

You’re so kind. No, he’s a high school sophomore and plans on being a p.e. Teacher. With modern editing software I won’t say it was easy—- far from it—- but just a few years ago it would have been impossible. Thirty hours were spent just on editing. We couldn’t have done it without the editing and production guy

People don’t realize how important a good editor is. The program brought me to tears a few times.

"...Please give us your dad’s name and we’ll be happy to remember him to Lou..."

I've spoken by telephone—and, because Lou's not computer-savvy—have sent letters. Somebody should carry a laptop to Lou—it would be very satisfying to see how much is devoted to PBY-5 squadron VP-11. (Totally destroyed 12/07/41 at Kaneohe and Pearl Harbor).

My sister and BIL, who live near Sacramento, had visited him at his former home.

He will remember "Gordon". :)
