Not being a student of the middle east, what’s the greater goal behind this?

If I'm not mistaken this was actually approved politically well over 20 years ago.

Trump is the first President since then that was WILLING to act upon it.

Good, except for the two state solution. Thats a terrible idea. The current status of “Israel” plus an occupied west bank that is “not Israel” is the answer.

One state where the west bank is part of Israel would quickly kill the nation by giving Palestinians the right to vote.
Two state creates a Palestinian nation and puts an independent hostile nation state poised right into the heart of Israel and bring a giant part of the nation into rocket range.

Two state is a very bad idea.

In my view, Trump “blessing” the Palestinians etc is setting them up. By doing this, he will show how the Palestinians are unwilling to give up their position that Israel must be destroyed. They do not want peace. Besides having the guts to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capitol, he is laying groundwork for the defense of Israel against Iran and its puppets.
