Every six months for more than two decades, U.S. presidents have had to decide all over again whether to move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Since the Clinton administration, they decided each time to keep the embassy where it is, seeking not to throw a wrench into delicate Middle East peace talks. On Tuesday, however, after signing a waiver putting off the move in June, President Donald Trump informed the Palestinian Authority’s President Mahmoud Abbas that he’s going to recognize the contested holy city as Israel’s capital and begin the process of moving the embassy there.
That decision, which experts fear will spark unrest throughout the Arab world, represents the conclusion of a process that began in 1995, with the passage of that year’s Jerusalem Embassy Act. The law required the U.S. to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem by a set deadline, but conceded that the move could be put off for six months at a time as long as the President “determines and reports to Congress in advance that such suspension is necessary to protect the national security interests of the United States.”

“... delicate Middle East peace talks. ...” How do you have any meaningful talks, much less delicate talks, when one side refuses to recognize the existence of the other?

So Clinton supported it in principle - but never bothered carrying through.
Bush campaigned on it, but then broke his promise, probably twice.
Not sure with Obama.
Trump promises it...and now will KEEP HIS PROMISE.

No peace during the two decades the law was enacted. So instead of repeating the same mistake over and over again (which is insanity by the way) let’s follow the law and let the chips fall where they may.

So, for 22 years we have kicked the can down the road on this so we didn’t spark Middle East unrest? The Middle East has known nothing but unrest for 100’s of years....no matter what anyone does.

Abbas last month... told Abbas he has two months to either accept the Saudi proposal or leave office to make way for a new Palestinian leader who will accept it... proposes the establishment of limited Palestinian sovereignty over small portions of Judea and Samaria. The Gaza Strip, over which the Palestinians have had full sovereignty since Israel pulled its military forces and civilians out in 2005, would be expanded into the northern Sinai... they would be able to establish their capital in the Jerusalem suburb of Abu Dis.
