I was on Nimitz when we lost one in 87. Used to park them on ‘the finger’ and gave the ship an instant two degree port list.

What I was expounding on was China’s claim that they didn’t require nuclear power to produce the electricity for their Electro magnetic launch system.

The U.S. built one for the Navy and it required a tremendous amount of power. So much so I can’t even recall it right now. That go’s double for the power needed for the electro magnetic rail gun system.

I think the Chinese are going to find out that they’re going to need to buy more fuel oil and tankers to keep that carrier running.Unless of course that they have found a way to defeat the laws of physics.

Not exactly stealthy looking is she?

Still, I dig the shark decal at the back.

Understand. Yes, I think that the need to EMALS power forced the Navy to increase the reactors on the Ford and subsequent carriers.

An oil fired carrier electrical systems just do not have the energy density of a nuke carrier.

“All carrier-based aircraft need to jettison their munitions and burn off their fuel before landing on a carrier to reduce runway damage and the risk of a fire or explosion.”

So F-18’s have to jettison it’s expensive unused missiles before landing?

I didn’t fly them, just launched a few. While it took two sailors to hook up the F-4, it took four of my biggest aviation bos’n mates to carry the bridle that connected the A-3 to the shuttle (catapult). Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when we successfully launched and trapped that beast.

China if anything is patient. They will eventually figure it out. The real question: does the US have the will and money to rebuild their navy. Seven years to China is the blink of an eye.

So they have a couple of carriers. I’ll wager they have little what to do with them.

Actually I think conventional carriers have a lot of advantages. Damage control being one of them.

There are advantages to conventional powered aircraft carriers.

Um, the dirty little secret is a carrier battle group is conventionality powered with the exception of the carrier itself. So they is always refueling operations( called UNREP) going on almost daily anyway. Don’t get too hung up on nuclear power, it is just an exotic way to boil water.

The question isn’t how many ships the PLAN has today but how many they can crank out in an emergency. My guess is a fully mobilized Chinese industrial economy could crank out massive amounts of hardware and ships.

True you can use oil to boil water just as well as nuclear power but your less reliant on tanker support for the carrier. All you need is JP-4 for the aircraft and bunker oil for the support ships.

A ship using a magnetic launch system is going to need a hell of a lot of oil to produce the electricity to create the magnetic force to throw a 33000 pound plane off the deck.

During a war those AOR Tankers will become big targets:

I don’t think the Chinese have this thought out yet even after they stole a large portion of the technology.

The Whale, Baby!

They were still launching a few of those when I was in, still had the bridles and everything!

Geez! I had no idea they were still flying those things in 1987! They were still flying a few Vigilantes when I was in...not as big as the A3, but a pretty big plane too!

That airplane is about as stealthy as a garbage truck.

"I didn't mean to say the J-15 should be hauling garbage..."

I don’t know. I suppose they will in some form.

I saw some pictures of their early flight ops, and they had planes tied down with fabric tie-downs, not chains.

I completely did not get that. Nylon straps with a rachet, similar to what you use to tie a load to the top of a car.

They may learn, but if they have to have someone tell them those straps aren’t going to work, it is going to take them a while.

A lot of lessons we take for granted in our carrier operations have been learned in money and blood. They look like they want to learn them the same way.
