Can't Kill Enough to Win? Think Again
US Naval Institute ^ | December 2017 | LTC David Boliano and LTC John Taylor

When is the United States going to do the killing necessary to beat its terrorist enemies or eliminate them entirely? Those given the awful task of combat must be able to act with the necessary savagery and purposefulness to destroy those acting as, or in direct support of, Islamic terrorists worldwide. In 2008, then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Navy Admiral Michael Mullen said, “We can’t kill our way to victory.” Ever since, many have parroted his words. But what if Admiral Mullen was wrong? The United States has been at war with radical Islamists four times longer than it was with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan in World War II. And those previous enemies were far more competent and aggressive than the terrorists. It is time to kill a lot more of them.

Too many commanders and their “operational law” judge advocates have neutered U.S. military forces with far too restrictive rules of engagement and investigations. 1 One Army infantry battalion commander reported that during a 15-month command tour in Iraq, he had to endure 600 AR 15-6 investigations (equivalent to a Navy JAG manual investigation), most of which examined the use of force by his troops. When asked when he had time to command, he answered, “Exactly.”

Human behavior has not changed much in recorded history. Neither have the basic tenets of war. It takes killing with speed and sustained effect to win wars. The notions that the U.S. military can win with “precision strikes” or “winning hearts and minds” are fantasy. Even the great victory in Operation Desert Storm was a bloody killing field. Just ask the remnants of the Tawakalna Division of the Iraqi Army.

We just have to kill them at a faster rate than they can be replaced.

Imagine if we had these rules of engagement, this mindset, during World War II. Would we have won that war decisively?

Apparently Islam needs to be given a severe smackdown every couple of Centuries.

Now is the time, again.

Throughout history, armies and nations that have won wars have done so by doing a LOT of killing. The losers have generally done a lot of killing too ... just weren’t quite as good at it as the winners.

Nuke Mecca, from orbit, just to be sure.

Islam would nuke Israel and The Vatican, if they could.

This is nonsense. The problem is Islam, and the threat is here. There is only one realistic solution: Ban Islam in the west closing all mosques, deport all Muslims (yes, even citizens), and institute a pet-the-pig requirement to board a plane or enter a non-Muslim country. Bring our troops home and put them on our borders. Nothing the US does in Muslim countries is going to make a damn bit of difference. The threat is Islam here. Let them kill each other in their own crappy countries.

Now I realize this is not going to happen, but neither is there any sense in sending our good people to die for nothing. Islam is the problem, and there is no point in continuing to fight in Muslim countries unless they plan wipe Islam off the face of the earth. These perpetual conflicts accomplish nothing but get our guys killed or maimed and waste billions of dollars.

I've said for a long time that the War on Terror is sort of like Florida's War on Mosquitos. No, we'll never kill all of them so all we can do is to kill them down to a tolerable level. We're nowhere near there yet.

Nope, can’t kill our way to victory.

Just like we couldn’t drill our way to lower oil and gas prices.

Our men in uniform should never fear the JAG attorneys more than the enemy, but sadly they do.

perhaps we first need to have congress declare war - just like WWII

if you can‘t get a DoW then perhaps you shouldn’t be committed to a war

We don’t have to kill them all, or even most of them, we just need to kill enough, and most importantly in such a decisive manner, that they lose the will to fight. Our problem all along has been that we haven’t focused on destroying their will to continue to fight.

That’s what the significance of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was. Horrific as those events were, they certainly didn’t kill a significant portion of the overall Japanese population. That wasn’t their intent. The purpose was to shock and demoralize the Japanese to such an extent that they realize continued conflict on their part was futile. It took two atomic bombs to finally convince them, a testament to their fanaticism at the time, but in the end it worked.

Islam is based upon conquest and domination of other religions and cultures. The only way to defeat it is to subjugate and demoralize it’s adherents. Nothing short of that will work.

My neighbor is a Rear Admiral, USN (retired). He briefly reported to Mullen. His opinion of him is extremely low....a true perfumed prince.
