Earthquake felt in Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania (4.4)

A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 has struck Delaware, with shaking felt as far away as Baltimore, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and New York City, seismologists and residents say. Only few details were immediately available.

The earthquake, which struck at around 4:47 p.m. on Thursday, was centered about 6.4 miles northeast of Dover, or 11 miles southeast of Smyrna. It struck at a depth of 5 miles, making it a very shallow earthquake.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.1. People across the region - as far away as Salisbury, Annapolis, Baltimore, Wilmington, Vineland, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and New York City, reported feeling the earthquake.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries but we're working to gather more information.

I was in Richmond, VA when that earthquake hit a few years back. Everyone knew I was from L.A. and most yelled “(FD) what should we do?”

Understood that a 4.4 is legitimate news on the east coast.

But out here in the land of fruits and nuts it has to be 100 times stronger than that to make the news.

I suffer a common cold currently, head and nose all stuffed up, didn’t notice anything. None of my cats acted up, either.

With the scale of 5.1, you would think some stuff got rattled, well, a very strange earthquake, then.

I remember when an earthquake hit the DC-Baltimore area several years ago. There were aftershocks for several days afterwards. I remember about a week later, when there had been aftershocks in the middle of the night, hearing Laura Ingraham say on her radio show, “I felt the Earth move about 1 o’clock in the morning!”
