Collins: Health-care fix will pass before tax bill

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said early Thursday that she expects legislation to lower health-care premiums to pass Congress before senators take a final vote on a $1.5 trillion tax-reform bill that would repeal the Affordable Care Act's individual mandate.

“When you take out that one provision from the ACA it causes premiums to go up as healthier, younger people leave the market place,” she said.

Senate GOP leaders at the urging of conservatives have added to the tax package a provision that would repeal ObamaCare’s requirement that people purchase health coverage. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that could cause insurance premiums to rise and increase the number of uninsured by 13 million people by 2027.

To mitigate the impact, GOP leaders plan to pass legislation negotiated by Senate Health Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Sen. Patty Murray (Wash.) that would reinstate cost-sharing reduction payments to insurance companies.

Collins is a stupid cow. Many younger single people are already not participating. Why should they? They can wait until something comes up and sign up if they need it. I know a lot of people who are doing that.

And the problem with repealing the demand US citizens to purchase a private product is?

That and the up to 24 year old coverage on the parents plan was just as outrageous, not to mention pre-existing medical problems. That alone could hardly be called health INSURANCE. There were and are so many things wrong with that middle of night Fedgov takeover. Nobody ever asks why Canadians cross the border for our health care.

Well, Susan, you could have done something about the Obamacare repeal when you had the chance.

But NOOOOO! Principle was just too important, the principle being that President Trump is not to be allowed to take credit for ANYTHING.

There are several Senators like that. But most of them are Democrats.

“...When you take out that one provision from the ACA it causes premiums to go up as healthier, younger people leave the market place...

Another way to say that is "“When you take out that one provision from the ACA premiums rise to the point this law forces them to healthier, younger people are no longer forced to enter the marketplace on penalty of law." Then we can see what Obamacare REALLY costs and the drum for it's full repeal will begin beating....loudly.

The single biggest problem with Obamacare is this provision. It sets a REALLY REALLY bad precedent...which wouldn’t be a problem if our government system wasn’t based on precedent.

There are SO many fixes for that. One is let the insurance companies compete interstate. Competition always drives costs down. There are others.

I have no degree in business but have owned 2 small companies and partially a third. We offered health insurance in all 3 and it worked. Our employees had access to either a PPO or HMO.

I say screw her over on this. Get it to conference using her support then leave her out of the negotiations moving forward. Lose her vote and work to keep the others.

Let’s fix both in December. That would make for a merry Christmas.

Oh, wait. This is Congress. Never mind.

Obamacare is bad law. Good riddance.

Aha.

I knew there would be just enough hold-outs for whatever reason that the Establishment can’t quite get around to stop raping the taxpayer.
