Protester pleads guilty to conspiring to disrupt DeploraBall for Trump supporters

A 34-year-old activist admitted in court Tuesday to discussing a plot to disrupt an inaugural ball for Trump supporters with an acid attack inside the National Press Club in downtown Washington.

Scott R. Charney, of Northwest Washington, pleaded guilty in D.C. Superior Court to conspiracy to commit assault, a misdemeanor. In an agreement with prosecutors, the criminal record will be expunged if he performs 48 hours of community service.

The arrest of Charney hours ahead of the Jan. 19 DeploraBall attracted national attention, with police saying they had successfully foiled a dangerous plan to spread butyric acid through the press club’s ventilation system the night before Trump was inaugurated as president.

The crux of the police case was a conversation secretly recorded by associates of conservative activist James O’Keefe, who caught Charney and two others discussing the plot over beer at a pizza restaurant in December. O’Keefe’s operatives took the video to D.C. police and posted portions of it on the Internet.

He planned to throw acid on people, and now he gets off with 48 hours community service and an expunged criminal record? Would these prosecutors have been so lenient with a plea had the acid been meant for them?

C’mon you people. It was for a good cause and he was probably starting to turn his life around or something.

An acid attack. Let that roll around in your head for a minute.

Good thing for him this attack was foiled. Had he permanently disfigured people with acid, he’d probably get 72 hours of community service!

Uneffing believable!!

He should have gotten 15 years in the pen for planning this attack.

Instead 48 HOURS of community service AND record expunged? The prosecutors responsible for this staggeringly bad deal should be charged as accomplices and co-conspirators.

FYI, butyric acid in the ventilation system would not be dangerous, rather it would spread a foul smell throughout the venue. Isobutyric acid, a relative, is the essence of the smell of rancid butter. This is why the charges are not harsher. It would be more of a nasty prank than a terrorist attack.

This is the scumbag:

You know, in this corner of the USA, I see liberal moonbats all-the-time on the road driving cars with bumperstickers all over the back like this:

I always have an urge to drive by and see what they look like...and invariably, you can tell. They 'look' the part.

When I saw this story, I had the same impression: he/she/it 'looks' the part.

"He planned to throw acid on people, and now he gets off with 48 hours community service and an expunged criminal record?"

First, as others have stated, the acid was intended for insertion into the air conditioning system to create a terrible smell, not to disfigure any person.

Second, this person pled guilty to "conspiracy", which means he didn't act alone. It may well be that the prosecutor arranged this deal in order to more forcefully prosecute his associate in crime.

We may not have heard the last of this case.

You are probably right which just shows how asinine our legal system has become. Undoubtedly the courts where he appeared are Democrat courts.

The use of any chemical in an attack on people would fall under the “CBW” clause of the anti-terrorism acts, esp. those amendments (If I remember correctly) to the Patriot Act.

If Charney didn’t plead to a deal and this sentence is correct, then I smell a read on the Bench.

“Conspiracy” to commit a violent act, is, in and of itself, a felony.

Unfortunately, it appears that all three conspirators were sentenced to 48 hours of community service. The act they planned was extremely reckless and if carried out could have caused a panic and many deaths.

And I remember reading not long ago about a not so bright looking couple getting 120 years prison sentence for their child being found malnourished with supposed maggots in the diaper. The child is alive, but was obviously neglected. Now, they are obviously not fit to raise children but life in prison is just clearly wrong.
