Roger Waters broadcasts cancelled in Germany over support for Israel boycott

German public broadcasters have dropped plans to air concerts next year by ex-Pink Floyd musician Roger Waters, citing what they call “accusations of antisemitism against him”.

Waters, part of one of the world’s most critically acclaimed and commercially successful rock bands from 1965 to 1985 before going solo, is a member of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS) that targets Israel over its occupation of territories where Palestinians seek statehood.

Five state television and radio affiliates of the national ARD network have pulled out of broadcasting concerts by the 74-year-old Waters in Berlin and Cologne scheduled next summer “in reaction to anti-Semitism accusations against him”, Berlin and Brandenburg public radio (RBB) said.

RBB, part of the ARD network, said it wanted to send a message to other artists who, heeding the BDS, refused to perform in Israel. Waters joined the movement in 2011.

“Taking a clear position here is an important signal for RBB to the Jewish communities in Berlin and Brandenburg,” RBB director Patricia Schlesinger said in a statement.

Accusations? He has been pretty open about it, is my impression.

It is good to see some German leadership not being full on Leftist SJW crazy. So much of what they do seems that way.

I used to like Pink Floyd as a kid in the 70's ... "Dark Side Of The Moon" is a brilliant album, musically. lyrically, and within its concept, as is "The Wall".

Otherwise, years later I realized that Pink Floyd's narrative is all about mental instability, insanity, depression, loneliness, paranoia. It always was.

They exploited a horrible human existence for fortune and fame, and no matter how good their music was back then I'll always remember it as rather 'depressing'

Rog Waters continues this meme with his negativity towards life, with his harping on current events, people, and with his general miserable attitude.

So true. I waters has never hidden who he is. Good on Germany. However it’s the same old blind squirrel/ nut thing. Germany will be back to their regularly scheduled insanity shortly.

Shut up and play is always good advice for musicians.

I saw him back in 2006 on the ‘Darkside’ tour. Great show. He always has top notch musicians and the ladies singing backup were spectacular. Too bad his politics are stopping people from hearing his music.

Bingo. If he just stuck with what he knows best: Depression, Anxiety, Insanity, Paranoia, etc etc, and just playing the music that got him to where he is today, then it would be alright. But to rant 'politically' and to pisse off [sic] half your potential audience is just uncalled for in this day and age.

About 10 years ago I saw Jeff Beck at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC ... that same night, just across the street at MSG played Roger Waters ... as both shows ended at approx the same time the crowds from both shows kinda mingled around Penn Station, talking about the show(s) that they'd seen that night.

I said that I saw the better show. :)

Kind of sad to say that I’m a little surprised the Germs are doing this. I’m very glad, though!

I was a little young for Pink Floyd’s heydey, but I listened to them as a kid in the 80s. The Wall was simply amazing to me. Last I checked it wasn’t available in digital format on Amazon, but maybe one of these days; I just don’t listen to my old Pink Floyd cassettes anymore!

Yeah. I still love classic Floyd. Yes all but the very earliest albums are giving homage to the LSD insanity of Syd Barrett (who got a full share for years after he was unable to contribute). The music is about the human condition and is often brilliant.
I hate the politics of most of the musicians whose music I love.
I really don’t like the music of Uncle Ted Neugent. I love his politics. Cest la vie.

If you didn’t fancy The Wall you should try Animals (’77).

As much as I agree that Jeff Beck is a superior musician, Waters' 2010 "The Wall" tour (which I caught at MSG - probably the same night of which you speak) was possibly THE greatest live show I ever saw from a multimedia extravaganza perspective - better than Yes' lasers in 1984 but not as breathtaking as The Who's Quadrophenia tour in 2012-2013. They built the wall live during the show, there were projections on the wall, and the sound and band were awesome.

Of course, that euphoria was tempered by the flying pig with Stars of David on it, a projected rainstorm with rain, dollars, crosses and Stars of David and a few other things that you can see here.

I no longer buy Floyd material, and Roger's solo stuff was dreck so nothing lost there. And, as you note, we still have Jeff Beck.

Better check Mr. Waters' inflatable pig for antisemitic statements.

When I he toured the US in 2008, it was festooned with all sorts of antiChristian and other statements (pro-Bama, etc.).

His concerts have been become the very sort of fascist hate rallies he mocked in The Wall.

There was a reason that the Dopers floor in college was always playing Playing Pink Floyd. I avoided that floor.

Animals is the best. Sandwiched between “Wish You Were Here” and “The Wall”, if often gets missed. “ Dogs” is my top 10 all time favorite songs. I play it tuned down a half step in D9..

Roger Waters is one of my most despised and hated musicians.

I went to one of his concerts back in 2004, and had no idea he was a raging, full blown, militant moonbat. I was subjected to several hours of straight far, far left political commentary, with a full media of music coupled with things like images of oppressed Palestinians, American Indians being massacred, etc.

It ended with a 40 foot high helium-inflated elephant balloon being released into the sky that had “F*** Bush” on one side and “Vote Democrat” on the other in sloppy red dripping blood paint.

I used to like Pink Floyd, and I cannot even listen to them at all now. Granted, I should probably have known he was like that, but didn’t. I just listened to the music.
