U.S. Military Jets Have 'No Business' in Black Sea, Says Russian General After 'Unsafe' Intercept
Newsweek ^ | 11/28/17 at 5:24 AM | Damien Sharkov On

According to the Pentagon, the Russian fighter swooped in to follow the U.S. aircraft while in international airspace—an acceptable precaution after identifying a foreign jet, even though the P-8A had its transponders on. However the Russian jet crossed in front of the U.S. plane from right to left, the Pentagon told CNN, engaging its afterburners, thereby prompting the U.S. Poseidon to spanner into "a 15-degree roll and violent turbulence."

The Russian military subsequently confirmed that the intercept over international waters did take place but did not address the accusation that the maneuver was unsafe or reveal other details about the incident, state news agency Itar-Tass reported.

...

Also speaking to state news agency RIA Novosti, the retired deputy commander of Russia’s air force, Nikolay Antoshkin, dismissed the U.S. reaction.

“Our jet simply indicated, approached, the airman had a look and demonstrated that [the Poseidon] must leave,” Antoshkin, said on Tuesday.

“Americans have nothing to do in the Black Sea. This is an enclosed sea,” Antoshkin said, lamenting that in Soviet times, when Moscow controlled all but Turkey’s ports in the Black Sea, foreign air forces did not fly freely above the waters.

Hey General,

You don’t determine the extent of “our business”.

Chinese J-8 jet attempted this kind of close flyby in 2001, crashed into the US EP-3 and the Chinese pilot died.

While I would agree to a certain extent, do remember that we take it upon ourselves to tell the Russians how they should behave. While telling them to stay out of our business we are quick to get involved in their business.

I know. We are a simple peace loving democratic Empire.

Last time I looked Romania is a NATO member, and we have military bases there. Romania is located on the Black Sea.
Hence US (NATO) aircraft fly there.

Of course Russia views the Black Sea as the Kremlin’s bath tub.

As many who have traveled to Romania can testify, the Romanians love America.

the problem with this report is two fold. First NewsWeek is fake news and their source, cnn, is even worse.

After we had to win two world wars we decided to be a referee. We don’t exclude, we fight to keep the seas open for all.

And we don’t try to wreck others planes in international waters.

Moral equivalence fail...

Just saw this on Fox News.

They said the engagement lasted 24 minutes and the Russian jet several times passed in front of the US plane as close as 50 feet, while on afterburner.

“Could a P8 carry Sidewinder missiles?”

From what I can tell you can put these missiles on practically anything that can fly.

...And your Russian submarines have no business off the east coast of the US and the Caribbean, Ivan. But that’s how the game is played, isn’t it?
