Cook County Hospital, now Stroger Hospital. They treat more gunshot wounds than any other place in America. Average cost per victim is nearly $500,000.
Multiply that by 3,000 or so a year and pretty soon you’re talking real money.

My point is “county” I work in a level 1 trauma hospital and I have often wondered how they handle all those gunshot victims. But, my hospital is quasi State which means that we get some money from the State and a majority from insurance including Medicare/Medicaid. But a county funding this level of medical center seems out of line. Running a medical center is VERY expensive. Certainly will put a dent in their budget.
Only those gov’t entities who do NOT possess a money printing machine, are forced to balance budgets. Only the federal gov’t has that machine.
That’s $623,052.96 per job.
This is Cook County IL. The State of IL (taxpayers) kick in tens of millions because racism or something. Cook County taxpayers fund the rest. It’s not like they have actual paying customers or anything.
The only, and I do mean ONLY reason to go to this hospital is if you’ve caught a bullet. If you make it there alive after being shot you’ve got better than a 90% survival rate.
The military sends doctors there for training.
For anything else, forget about it. Beg to be transferred to Northwestern or UC Medical or Loyola.

I lived near Manny Sklar's Sahara, a big hotel/supper club, out near O'Hare. He refused to buy his laundry and liquor from the Outfit, and they would throw blackpowder bombs into his lobby. (Finally, he was cut in half with a pump gun, outside his house...)
