So maybe we should just cancel Thanksgiving this year?
It’s probably an attractive idea to many of those now traveling over the river and through the woods for turkey, cranberry sauce and political arguments that promise more angst than a flat tire in a thunderstorm. It grows increasingly clear that the problem in America just now isn’t that we disagree with one another.
It is, rather, that we hate one another.
You may think that an overstatement, but the word is used advisedly. Take the case of GOP senatorial candidate Roy Moore as an example. As you surely know, some putative Christians still support him despite credible charges that he has a history of perverted behavior toward teenage girls.
Now it arrives in this moment of existential chaos, this era when so many have lost themselves in cognitive dissonance and situational morality. An accused child molester for U.S. Senate? Really?
Yet even in this charged moment, over the river and through the woods we go, maybe not because we want to, but because we have to, because that’s what you do. We will arrive to tables laden with turkey and dressing, cakes and pies and other good things, where many of us will sit in awkward tension and even open rancor with people we love because they are family and friends, yet hate because they are monstrously wrong.
It makes one thankful for Thanksgiving itself. However grudgingly we mind it, this ritual still binds us. It still makes us one.
And right now, little else does.

I am tired of rolling with it. Every time one of my relatives says something stupid, I usually just smile and nod, rather than getting into it. But I am tired of my lack of response being taken as assent.
So, from now on, I will simply say that I do not agree, but do not wish to discuss the matter further.
Sometimes I think half the problem with the Left is that they just assume that everybody agrees with them, because people just don’t want to deal with it.

People morally outraged that Moore dated teenage girls, would gladly cut your daughter’s 9 month old baby in the womb to pieces and sell his or her parts.
I have printed the words “You stole my bicycle” on the back of one of my business cards. When somebody wants to get into it on Roy Moore with me, I hand them the card and ask them to read the back. After that, I insist that they refer to me as “accused bicycle thief...”
Why should I cancel just because you are scum?

Well said. They rarely venture out of their little echo chamber. And when they do, the are in for a shocker. And when confronted with the facts they can be irrational, even violent.

He has done everything he could to inculcate resentment and hate and to turn us against one another.

Leonard Junior transfers hugely! Wow! Hey Leonard Junior: It’s YOU and your side that hates, not us. It’s your kind that make Thanksgiving miserable, for a long time. You just hate that we don’t silently tolerate you any longer.
Suggestion: Put up an American flag this Thanksgiving. Together recite the Pledge of Allegience, sing God Bless America, recite the Apostles Creed, then say a nice, deep grace. Then put on patriotic music low in the background, smiling at any lefty guests the whole time.
