Wonder if Mr. Donahue at the Chamber of Crony Commerce feels any responsibility for the deaths he and his organization have caused in order to pocket and extra buck or two? I doubt it. They believe it’s okay for Americans to die in order to pad their bank accounts. After all it’s the cost of doing business, right Mr. Donahue???
I find that unlikely because when you are working alone in a high intensity drug trafficking area you are always on high alert for just that kind of thing.
My best guess is that he was in the process of arresting a large group which put him in close proximity to the aliens/smugglers. At that point one or more jumped him, got him on the ground and killed him.
Its every agents worst fear. Agents frequently apprehend groups of 10 to 20 aliens at a time by themselves. Even if only five or six put the bum rush on you you are in big trouble because as you focus on the first attacker the others can quickly move in.
That Nat-GO series 'Border Wars' give you the false impression that the agents work in groups of 5 to 10 and there is always a helo just moments away.
Its nothing like that in places like Big Ben where your backup may be hours away and if you have a partner he is likely to be a 100 yards or so away covering the other trail they could be on. A helo, heck you could go days or weeks without seeing one.
My total speculation is that this was not drug related. The cartels know that killing US agents is very bad for business risks the US deploying the military along the border.
My guess is that the agent encountered a group of crossers and wile in the process of securing them he was jumped by one or more who were prior deported convicted felons who knew that a trip to the processing center meant a strait path to federal prison.
This is a very dangerous profession and the agents go out every day and take this same chance. They need our support.

Personally, I think the border patrol should shoot every male border crosser, while capturing the women and children and sending them back.
In other words, it spends resources on an action that actually encourages more illegals to come here. The risk of dying out in the desert would be a reasonable deterrent to would-be illegals, but not if they know that someone is likely to come to their rescue or at least leave out food and water for them.

there are groups (humanitarian orgs, some denoms of churches, etc) who think it inhumane the suffering of the border crossers and put out water and stuff for them. It sickens me some churches think it’s Jesus like to practically invite illegals to come and to try to get them on all sorts of govt handouts. I remember seeing articles years ago. Unreal. Like you said leaving stuff out for illegals or helping them in any way, just encourages more to come.

In such cases, where there is irrefutable evidence of the guilt of the accused, I am a strong advocate of expedited trial followed by public execution all within the time frame of a week.

The account of this tragedy seems to imply that the BP agent was patrolling alone when he was attacked. Is this possible, and if so, WHY is it possible?

Exactly how I look at it. Gun them down like rabid dogs. If that was authorized tragedies such as this would cease almost immediately. Put the Seal snipers along the border with orders to kill every male that steps over the line.

Ambush was drug related: Rip Crew, working theory, sub-contracted by the local cartel.
Cartels don’t want to start a war with the BP, that is correct, but Rip Crews don’t care and they ambushed the Agents. Remember Agent Brian Terry? Rip Crews also.
My son was ambushed years ago, dark night, no moon, and because the area, like the Big Bend area, is scrubby with lots of hiding places, and this made a great location for an ambush.
In this case, the Agents were not engaged in taking down a group when they were attacked. I can see why you think that but, no, they arrived at the sensor, saw it was activated and one Agent went back to either use the vehicle radio or bring the vehicle closer. The other Agent was assessing the sign when it happened.
Yes, caution is used all the time, heck, the entire southern border is an active drug smuggling area so the Agents use caution.
As I mentioned earlier, my son was ambushed while his partner was about a 1/4 mile away. Happened fast. He won, took down the three that attacked him.
Most people have no idea of the dangers and risks. Most people fuss about hwy check-points. They never have an answer about when do the BP stop looking? 50 miles inside the US? 10 miles? 100 yards? Just on the US side of the border? These people fuss about stops but at the same time, rant about illegal aliens flooding the US.
BP Agents are not “border guards,” they are highly trained and tough Agents, they have to be for reasons you cited.
By the way, 10-20 illegals is a relatively small number. My son’s sector routinely took down groups of a hundred or more, back in the day.

I agree a rip crew was my first guess as well because drug mules generally just drop the load and run same with regular illegal aliens.
However the fact that the agents were attacked with rocks implies that the perps were not armed a head of time. I can't see a rip crew going out unarmed. I hope we know more in the coming days.
Lets just hope the perps did not make it to a sanctuary city.
