Secular activist claims at least 30 'closeted atheists' in Congress

A prominent advocate for the irreligious says there are at least 30 "closeted" members of Congress who don't believe in God, and that he hopes a California congressman's Thursday admission of disbelief will encourage others to come forward.

The advocate, an advisory board member of the Secular Coalition for America, has for more than a decade plied private admissions of atheism from members of Congress with the promise of confidentiality, and said Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., is in good company.

Huffman said in an interview published Thursday that “I suppose you could say I don’t believe in God,” though he's uncomfortable with the certainty the word "atheist" implies.

“People are not ashamed, it's a political issue soley," the Secular Coalition member told the Washington Examiner.

Are they going to start shooting all the Christians when they declare?

How convenient for a politician not to have a moral compass.

The way they act in Congress, I would have expected a higher number than that. Congress is the home of the dirt bags.

I’m sure it is far more than that. Probably 50%

I find it much easier to believe in God than to believe what’s in Congress.

Is that all? I think there is a definite under-count.

There is only one religion there, and that is the worship of Mammon.

Politics is a scam and we’re suckers for playing.

And every last one of them is a Rat.Add to that number the Rats who say they're "Unitarian/Universalists" (who are also atheists) and you've got far more.

Today's Rat Party is openly, actively hostile to true Christianity and true Judaism.

The key is "CLOSETED" atheists. Meaning, they probably represent themselves as Christians to the public, but don't really believe.

I agree the number of atheists in Congress is a lot closer to 535 than 0.

All reasonable atheists eventually move to the agnostic column when subjected to debate.

Democrats in safe seats can get away with admitting to be an atheist. Republicans, not so much.

As long as they vote the correct way, I couldn’t care lees.

I think we’d be surprised if we could do a spiritual X-ray.

Part of the problem is that really tough Christians (tough in the sense of withstanding many slings and arrows for the sake of the love of God, not tough as in being harsh by principle) are few and far between — but that’s whom we’d need in Congress to stand up to the intense winds of worldliness in DC.

Let’s have a heart here. We probably have more Christians than we think, but they’re just plain weak. While being willing to go through the pearly gates, they are still too intimidated to bring some of the pearly gates down here.

But again we should keep in mind that even in the best circumstances the world is not our home. An all-Christian America, were that possible, would still be composed of sinners whose salvations needed to complete their work before they could live completely with God. Let’s not have the tail wagging the dog. Humility before God isn’t just a nice gesture of honor to Him. It’s necessary to live in peace.

There have been a number of “atheists” on FR that were functionally like this. They were willing to live and let live towards believers while still not being sold on God.

And God knows that. And God won’t be caught flat footed. Sometimes the devil really gets some people’s spiritual knickers in a twist, and it takes Jesus hitting them upside the head, so to speak, before they understand where their spiritual bread is buttered. These people are just too busy doing things vigorously in pride to notice God. Jesus had to hit me upside the head. He also did it to Paul in the bible.

and there are probably closeted gays in Congress too.

There are closeted (fill in the blank of bizarre behavior) in Congress as well.

So I wouldn’t be surprised if there are closeted atheist types.
