GOP to Repeal Johnson Amendment's Muzzle on Pastors Through Tax Reform
CBN News ^ | Nov 2, 2017 | Abigail Robertson

House Republicans have finally unveiled their new tax reform bill. Despite some delays, Republican leadership insists they are still on schedule to have the bill on President Trump's desk by the end of the year.

"Our goal in the House is to get this bill out of the House, passed on the floor by Thanksgiving," House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers told CBN News.

The hold-up centered on a proposal to end the federal income deduction for state and local taxes utilized by high tax states like New York and California. GOP lawmakers in those states are hesitant to support a plan that fails to preserve that deduction.

Another score Republicans hope to make through the tax bill: repealing the Johnson Amendment.

"I'm excited about the Johnson Amendment being put in there that will address the rights of churches and nonprofits to be able to speak without losing their tax exempt status," Rep. Jody Hice, R-Ga., tells CBN News.

Hice says GOP leaders and President Trump are united in wanting to end the law and seeing the tax plan move forward.

"I think we're going to see the economic engine of America boom if we're able to get this over the finish line," Hice said.

~~snip~~

"It's going to be a tax simplification, only three or four levels of income, you're going to literally, 80% of the American people are going to be able to fill out their income taxes on the back of a postcard," says Smith.

The Johnson Amendment = unConstitutional.

I don’t give up my other rights when I’m practicing my right to freedom of religion.

Freedom of speech is always a good thing . . . and pastors being muzzled was never fair - but I hope that they don’t forget that there first duty (main duty) is to preach the gospel.

We know the world is sold unto Satan . . . the god of this world, and preaching the truth is the best weapon against the dark.

Paul agrees with me:

“For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil” (Romans 16:19)

"I think we're going to see the economic engine of America boom if we're able to get this over the finish line,"

OK, stupid question time.
Since it's been so long since there actually WAS a budget, do spending bills go through the whole have a matching Senate bill, or reconcile the two thing?

If so, good luck getting this, or anything that looks like this, through the Senate. The finish line may be further than he thinks.

Just what we need, they will be able to speak freely. I do seem to remember something about that in the 1st Amendment... Protected by the 2nd Amendment.....

That’s the House, it would have to make it thru the alt-left Republican Senate.

I don't think you are right about it being unConstitutional. The Johnson Amendment didn't say Churches can't speak up on political issues, it said they would lose their tax-exempt status if they turn political. The Constitution doesn't guarantee any non-profit or religious institution exemption from taxes.

That said, the Johnson Amendment was a bad idea, which was not enforced against left-leaning churches and other non-profits. Glad it will be gone.

Churches are protected by the 1st Amendment freedom of religion.

They can’t tax us to exercise our freedoms.

If they can, then they’re not freedoms.

I was about to say the same thing.

One thing which is a little concerning, to me at least, is how far the church has drifted on social issues. The emergent, prosperity gospel and seeker sensitive type churches are a crap shoot as to whether they will promote traditional Christian values, and therefore Christian morality positions in the public square.

“The Johnson Amendment didn’t say Churches can’t speak up on political issues, it said they would lose their tax-exempt status if they turn political.”

It favors some churches over others, does it not? That is a step toward establishment.

Preach leftism, you’re good. Preach conservatism, the government hits you financially.

I believe this is a big deal. This is the conservatives equivalent of “community organizers” and activists. The lefts activists networks have have nowhere near these numbers.
