One of the biggest impacts of NAFTA is that it prohibited both of those countries from nationalizing their energy industries. It’s no coincidence that both Mexico and Canada surpassed Saudi Arabia as the largest foreign suppliers of U.S. oil by the late 1990s.
Was the U.S. better off in 1994 with $50 billion of imports and $50 billion of exports, or in 2015 with $296.4 billion of imports and $235.7 billion of exports?

Perot was right about the giant sucking sound, but IIRC he and his family owned an industrial airport that was all set up to benefit from NAFTA trade. So there are always some people who do directly benefit from things like NAFTA because they are in the right business and in part Ted Cruz in speaking for them.
