We would not be a nation, united with a central government to issue checks to the indolent. We’d be a Balkanized nation of squabbling states, counties, separate ‘’nation-states’’. In short we’d be a mess. To think the South would have let slavery if it had indeed won the war , after expending so much blood and treasure to win it is sophistry.
I never said the South could, nor even should have won. Only that I would have fought on its side.
In “Gone With The Wind” Rhett Butler knew that the North would win, even before the war began. Yet even at the South’s nadir, he joined the Confederacy.
I can’t really say what plays into such a mindset, except a certain propensity for lost causes.
“When they lower me down in that sweet Southern ground,
Have someone play Dixie for me.”
Didn’t say you did. I just asked a question. Why would you have fought for the South by the way?
In the words of some Confederate private who was asked the same by a detachment of Yankees, “I’m fight’n cause y’all’s down here.”
