Catalonia's regional Parliament voted overwhelmingly Friday in favor of independence from Spain, taking the country's political crisis into uncharted territory.

The vote came as the Spanish Senate debated the Madrid government's unprecedented plans to seize control of the autonomous region in a bid to quash its independence bid. Lawmakers voted in secret in the Catalan Parliament chamber after a heated debate on a motion "to form the Catalan Republic as an independent and sovereign state." The outcome: 70 votes in favor, 10 against and two blanks.

Previously they held a referendum. Now the legislature of the autonomous region have acted on it.

Catalonia is going to get crushed in any direct military confrontation. Even if they can get some of the local police forces to side with them, they won’t win directly against Madrid. This is likely to turn into a rebel terrorist action with assassinations and bombs along with street action by the Catalans to test Madrid’s will.

The Spanish government forced the Catalonian declaration .....

BBC Breaking news

“....Spain’s Senate is still to vote on whether for the first time to enact Article 155 of the Spanish constitution, which empowers the government to take “all measures necessary to compel” a region in case of a crisis.”

“It would enable Madrid to fire Catalan leaders, and take control of the region’s finances, police and public media.”

With the central government poised to arrest all of Catalonia’s elected officials the result was inevitable. Just “firing” Catalonian leaders is a hollow gesture albeit incindiary.

Spanish CWII, stay tuned.

Madrid is acting as foolishly as did George III.

Instead of accommodation, there is the mailed fist and refusal to compromise.

We know how this story ends — there will be conflict.

from France24

....”Albert Botran, a regional lawmaker for the far-left CUP party that backs Puigdemont and wants to split from Spain, vowed Friday to “make it difficult for the new, illegitimate government to get away with it.”

“The first action will be resistance,” he told Catalonia Radio.”

This business is going to get out of control if cooler heads don't prevail on either side.

“This business is going to get out of control if cooler heads don’t prevail on either side.”

That ship sailed when the Spanish government sent in their goons to attack peaceful voters and to attack voting locations.

Spain and Catalonia have long had an abusive relationship and when Catalonia said that they wanted to look into a divorce then instead of attempting a reconciliation Spain (like an abusive husband) instead issued threats and handed out beatings.

Time for Catalonia to go their own way.

All they need to do is stop paying any taxes.
Spain will collapse.

Yes, but Madrid intends to replace all the Catalan officials with bureaucrats from the national government. There is going to be a government of occupation and, I would assume, the Catalans will go into rebel resistance mode against those occupiers.

And what can the new officials do if everyone just refuses to pay taxes? Jail everyone? Shut down all their business?

Depends on how draconian Madrid wants to be. They could require new business licenses for instance and only grant them under favorable terms to Madrid. They can replace all local taxing and police authorities for enforcement. Of course, that assumes that the Catalans are passively cooperative. Alternatively, the heads of the Catalan government police forces and other departments could refuse to leave and use local police to defend and protect them for any attempts to remove them forcefully, etc. We will see how this plays out in the street.
