A Florence attorney died Saturday after collapsing in court during the closing arguments of a murder trial.

The Florence-Times Daily reports Jean Darby, 64, died at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital. She collapsed during the murder trial of Alfonso Jarmon in Florence.

Witnesses said Darby was in the middle of her closing arguments Thursday when she seemed to stumble, then caught herself on the jury box before collapsing.

Law enforcement officers in the courtroom rushed in to try to revive her. After the jurors had been taken to the jury room, one juror, a registered nurse, came back out to begin CPR on Darby.

The jury on Friday found Jarmon guilty after about 30 minutes of deliberation in the April 26, 2016 shooting death of 77-year-old Charles Hugh Perkins in Florence. During the trial, three eyewitnesses testified to seeing Jarmon shoot Perkins in the head.

That conviction may not withstand appeal.

Can her client be charged with another count of involuntary manslaughter? She wouldn’t have been there if not for him.

Most likely outcome will be a mistrial.

He is no longer her client.

But, ‘my lawyer dropped dead during my trial seems to be solid grounds for appeal.’

Appeal will be granted on grounds of inadequate legal representation.

I woulda thought the jury would find him not guilty.

Out of sympathy on account of his lawyer dying.

Which - I’m sure - made for a most dramatic closing argument.

“During the trial, three eyewitnesses testified to seeing Jarmon shoot Perkins in the head”.

Have to be a really good (and alive) attorney to beat that.

He will get convicted, but that conviction should not be from this trial.

“Out of sympathy on account of his lawyer dying.”

That’s an Oxymoron.

Defendant will appeal. Appeals court very well may grant a retrial.

The judge on the case is the presiding judge and has been on the bench nearly 10 years. At this point he isn’t concerned if he is overturned on letting the case go to the jury. I think it was the right call; she collapsed during closing and retrials are expensive and the Alabama court system is in woeful financial shape.

The Defendant was guilty as hell. Walked up to his 77 year old neighbor and shot him in the head, wish they could have brought capital charges.

This happen in my town. Ms. Darby was a good lawyer and a good lady. RIP Gloria Jean Darby.

lol. True.

And what you wanna bet the defendant will still have to pay the legal fees. If he don’t - the lawyer’s estate or the firm she worked for will sue him.
