Japan’s defense minister said the threat posed by North Korea has grown to an “unprecedented, critical and imminent level,” reflecting a rising sense of urgency over Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program.

Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera told counterparts from South Korea and the U.S. at a gathering of defense ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations here that Japan supports the American position that “all options are on the table”-

Can you imagine having NK on your doorstep? They have every right to be a little freaked out and getting ready for a worst case scenario.

North Korea isn’t content to just survive, they have to dominate. Fat Boy’s stability’s questionable.

.. they can always sit there and just keep their mouths shut,

or find a way into the modern world, which means a regime change and a brand spanking new agenda to work towards.

I tinks lil Kimmie is on a suicide mission.
MOABY suicide.

Kimbo is doing exactly what his ChiCom masters want him to do. Think about that.

Nukes for Japan, nukes for SoKorea, nukes for Taiwan, nukes for Australia. How’d you like that Chairman Xi? Your strategy with North Korea did what for you?

If reports are true, and China sticks to it’s (reported) guns, NK has a year left of solvency. It either goes out like the Soviet Union with a whimper or it goes for the Hail Mary (out with a bang).

The end of NK is either, unification with South Korea or China. But who wants them? By them, I mean the people with the full understanding that there is no government with any control. China would want NK for the buffer and the military strategic advantage. NK would be a burden for South Korea (at least initially).

I would if I were them, too.

NK is literally at their back door.

I guess this is their Cuban Missile Crisis.

The French and British should sell their nukes to those countries before they fall into the hands of their new masters, the Muslims.

RE: Japan is taking the N. Korea nuclear threat seriously.

So, what are they going to do about it, develop nukes and missiles as well? Or do they expect the USA to fight their battles for them?

Is it possible to follow the East-West German model post unification?

Only a crazy man would attack Japan.
They are a threat to no one, slowly dying due to lack of reproduction and the entire world would rain down on NK if they did attack.

Now SK has some logic but it would still be unbelievably stupid.

You have expressed my concern about Kim Jong Un. It’s obvious that his extravagant lifestyle has put his health in grave question. Would he decide to go out in a flash of glory by attacking his perceived enemies with his beloved nuclear arsenal?

I think the problem here is that North Korea is doing it’s absolute best to convey the notion that Deterrence will not work on them. Kim still has a credibility problem, and no one believes that he will cause the full scale destruction of his own country unless he is completely and utterly insane, but if its his strategy to make others thing that he is insane, it may be starting to work.

In other words, Japan might actually be worried that taking a passive policy of non-provocation isn’t going to assure their safety.

I believe that the terms of the WWII surrender doesn't allow them to do it without renegotiating terms.

It’s a very difficult situation. Kim is almost like the Muslims in that MAD isn’t much of a deterrent.

Interesting question. In that scenario, the people being reunified WANTED to be reunified. They were essentially prisoners of the communist conquest following WWII. They knew freedom existed on the other side of the wall. Hell, they could see it from rooftops. They knew what was going on. The people of NK are in the dark. They have been born, bred, programmed and educated to conform and hate all else, especially the USA and South Korea. How the people of NK would react is likely anybody's guess. Would they stream into the south like panicked refugees hoping to be free? Or would they attack and pillage like starving animals?

Brutal dictators save money by reducing the population they have to feed. That is gruesome and ugly. But it's not as uncommon as folks think. It's a good bet NK has been successful in finding all those with dreams of freedom and eliminating them. What of the population is left. We can hope, based on some defectors that have escaped that there are those who know better. But can they lead an ignorant mass of peasants? I can't imagine where they would start to try to unify North and South Korea. But if China took over, the people would still be better off and not know there was a difference.

The average NORK military recruit (say a 18 year old!) has the physical development of the average South Korean 12 year old. Mental development has to be similarly stunted.

The Japanese and Chinese have hated each other for a long time. It’s not hard to envision China using NK in a proxy against Japan.
