NFL ratings continue fall, latest Nielsen numbers show
ESPN ^ | 10/18/2017 | Darren Rovell

Through the first six weeks of the NFL season, total viewership of games is down 7.5 percent, compared with the first six weeks of 2016.

An average of 15 million people watched games for the first six weeks this year, compared with 16.2 million people through Week 6 last season, according to metrics from Nielsen.

An NFL spokesman didn't immediately return a message from ESPN seeking comment.

In the past week, Credit Suisse lowered its price targets on both Fox and CBS stock, citing NFL ratings declines.

"If ratings don't improve materially, we see a potential headwind to domestic advertising revenues," the investment bank's analyst Omar Sheikh wrote of Fox on Thursday.

On Monday, Sheikh estimated third-quarter revenue for CBS would be off 3 percent, versus the previously projected 1 percent, due to "soft ratings for both the summer [programming] and for the start of the NFL season."

Through six weeks (seven games), ESPN's Monday Night Football viewership is averaging 11.2 million viewers, a 6 percent increase through Week 6, compared with last year.

Compared with the first six weeks of the 2015 season, NFL ratings are off 18.7 percent -- a sharp drop, but a smaller decline when considering the general overall fall in television viewership due to people dropping their cable packages.

Last year, the NFL attributed part of its viewership decline during the first nine weeks of the season to competition from presidential election coverage. Viewership was indeed better for the second half of the season, after the election, but it still finished down 8 percent, compared with 2015.

This season's challenges also include player protests during the national anthem, which have pitted the NFL against President Donald Trump, who again tweeted Wednesday that players should stand to honor the flag.

Players and owners met Tuesday in New York to discuss how best to deal with their public platform and work together to support the fight against social injustice. The meeting led to further conversation on the matter but no immediate resolution.

The NFL becomes just another drive-by killing by the ghetto-trash “community.”

What needs to happen is a loss of revenue for companies who advertise with the NFL. If that happens you will see a dramatic shift in the position of the NFL.

The author must have learned math in a government school because the decline is NOT 7.5% but actually 9.25%. which is an understatement of 23%. All of this added up means the Slum Dog Millionaires of the BLM/NFL are running the league and guiding it into a ditch. It could be dead by the end of the season.

players salaries are reliant on the salary cap which is based on the revenue the league brings in....i’m not sure how much the league has to give back to advertisers before that salary cap number takes a hit...

My note to NFL team owners: You owe (quickly becoming former) fans an apology. And you owe it to our country that you ensure your employees do not ever again disrespect our National Anthem and American Flag, ever!

The owners are meeting in NYC. If they don't apologize today, their teams are done, all of them. Say goodbye to your sport, jack.

What needs to happen is any player who does not stand with his helmet in left hand and his right hand over the heart should become a Canadian Football league player.

P.S. Aaron Rodgers is a scumbag!!!

Duh. They dropped their cable because they wanted to drop ESPN and the NFL, not despite it...

Considering all the controversy over the protesting this is MINIMAL

Viewers need their NFL fix or they just don't care

In any case I find it depressing

The customer has the power and it is not being exercised

The NFL,Their leadership, their owners are all dying of self-inflicted wounds. Both the players and the owners have nary a clue of the real cause of “racial” inequality in America. I’ll give it to you in just a few words, Obama, Clinton the Democrat Party.

In the eight years of the Obama/Clinton Democrat Party control of the federal government, African-Americans suffered the worst unemployment and joblessness they have ever endured.

The major ghetto cities in the USA all are controlled and ruled by extreme left wing, Democrat politicians. They have been that way for at least the last fifty years. The “Black on Black” murder and wounding rates of thugs and innocents, including babies and children, are off the charts, as is rapes, robberies, drug traffic, abortions, fatherless families, lack of jobs, opportunities, decent, effective education, equality, etc. Folks...these are facts...period.

The good news is that under the leadership of POTUS, Trump, the jobless rate among Blacks, male & female is declining rapidly. Actually, POTUS, Trump is the best friend and ally African-Americans have...period.

But....these NFL “street thugs” have not a clue, as they bad mouth their country as the traitors and turncoats they all are.

Fact is: an awful lot of Black folks get it and want nothing to do with these fool, buffoons, led like sheep over the cliff, by the Congressional Black Caucus and their NAACP, who could care less about “Ghetto Folks” as history clearly shows.

The NFL is dead, the NBA is now beginning to die. An old saying applies quite well here: “Never bite the hand that feeds you”!!! As for me, I will not be feeding these “Hate America”, Obama/Clinton low life anymore!!! For all I care, you can “Starve”.....dumb dudes!!!

I have switched from my beloved Diet Pepsi to Diet Dr Pepper because of their sponsorship and promotion of the NFL (which is proudly displayed on the packaging)

"...Players and owners met ...to...work together to support the fight against social injustice..."

And this is why they will die.

It's not their mandate.

They need to know their proper place and perform as ordered.

Is that rayciss?

Wait, don't answer that. I don't care.
