I heard some defector on a radio program say that every home has a radio and the people are programmed to turn it on at certain times of day to listen to the daily propaganda messages. It only has one station.

The Pentagon and other agencies are probably more than ready for the go ahead to build and launch space based weapons.
Ideally they should have very advanced targeting, but the weapons themselves should be fairly low tech, designed to substantially increase the failure rate of ballistic missiles.
An ICBM might travel at 10,000 mph, so if it impacts just about anything in flight it will fail. Now imagine something like a cluster bomb, but carrying hundreds of thousands of small ball bearings, deployed in a ‘whip’ along the route of the ICBM. Maybe 10 or 20 miles along its route, where the cluster bomb is told it will be.
Alternatively, it might create a much denser ‘cloud’ of ball bearings that it will fly through.
Sure, there are other, flashier weapons we might use, but no reason to let the Russians and Chinese know about them if we don’t have to.
