The U.S. would not be the first to go nuclear, especially not against a pissant nation like NorK.
There is a reason no one has used Nukes in the last 72 years. They are not a strategically good weapon.

The “one thing” may not be what most people guess it is.
My guess is that it’s not nukes or any weapons, but pressure from China on NK.
China makes a lot of money from US investments, many things are manufactured in China. They may not want to lose that and may be willing to put a boot on the neck of the NK dictator, to get him to stop his idiocy.
It’s a gamble worth taking. Worst case, we miss, the Nork missile lands in the water. Best case, we knock it down, and tell the world that we’ll permit no more missile tests outside of NK air space.
Taking out a missile shouldn’t violate China/Russia concerns over who strikes first. The missile would be destroyed well out of NK space. So if NK retaliated, they become the first strike and unsupported. Theoretically.
MacArthur wanted to use them in China. Also they weren't any 'tac' nukes then. As for hitting Seoul. Seoul is a big place, not all of it is in range of the majority of the NK arty. And the arty they do have isn't going to shoot with impunity. 15 miles south of Seoul the NK arty is useless. Evac the town and the arty is useless. The size of the NK army really doesn't matter because they would be slaughtered in anything but a defensive position.
A nuke of any size carries the same opprobrium. In this case size doesn't matter. The use of any is going to gain the US a lot of shit. If the little dick nukes Tokyo, it won't matter.
This is what have been hearing and reading. South Korea is not that strong. Hence, why we are still there.

Followed up with about five B-2’s with the bunker buster version of the B-61 on top of Kim Jung Un’s deeply buried bunker.
After that the only thing is to get enough food and water to the starving people left without their central planned, and inadequate diets.
And for Kim, dial up that B-61 bunker buster to “crowd pleaser” setting....
