It was speculated that those shots directed to the fuel storage tanks were the first rounds fired.
I’m thinking he fired at the tanks BELIEVING that the accomplice set up the incendiaries. Given the level of preparation and his aviation background, Paddock probably knew the tanks would not have blown up without the incendiaries in place.
He had to think, “WOW off to a bad start” when they did not blow up.
Would take one heck of an amateur marksman, heck most snipers couldn’t do it. Not with your standard 5.56 NATO. At that distance it would be pretty dang tough to hit unless it was spread out like a sheet. That said it still wouldn’t be a huge fireball but big enough for affect. It also would push people towards his nest.
From 666 yards a 5.56 round has spent its foot power. Perhaps a 338 would penetrate both layers of steel.
After the shots hit the stage I counted 39 seconds on my watch before the next volley of shots. Take a look at your watch in the den, walk through the kitchen, take a swig of soda, walk to the front window. Heck - you would still have time to bust out the window with the hammer before you started shooting.
The quantity of tannerite in the vehicle would have had to be huge. We have reports that this man never showed up at the closest shooting range (20 miles from his house). To his a 30 lb weight of tannerite would have required him to shoot with accuracy of hitting a basketball at 666 yards. I did not see a scope on the rifles in the room....perhaps he had one. Still given the circumstances of that night to hit a basketball, with open sights at that range would require exquisite marksmanship.
He had to think, WOW off to a bad start when they did not blow up.
Interesting. And that may have lead him to kill himself sooner as well - lost his resolve realizing the other(s) had ditched him.
And using the valet seems too high profile. Why not just leave it for the other person parked somewhere? Because then what do you do with the keys? Although I guess he had to give the voucher to the other person - so why not just give him the keys? So yes the valet thing is odd. I’m guessing he didn’t expect to shoot up the place and then make his way to the lobby and say “Yes - if you would be so kind to pull my car up front please, I would like to leave now.”
Although I suppose the voucher could be stuck in between pages 56/57 of the June 2017 Reader’s Digest off in the corner lobby.
One of the photos had what looked to be a .308 with scope and bipod. Hadn’t looked fired to me (was still stage perfectly parallel to a wall, magazine on the counter above it, no mag in the rifle.
I wonder if you could fashion 30 to 50 lbs of tannerite into 2” thick sheets (in cardboard) and lean them against the doors of the car - providing a much larger target.
The first time my teenage daughter shot a rifle she hit the gong at 300 yards on her second shot. (And her third, fourth and fifth!). I have no idea, but I’m guessing with some careful fire someone with a bit of practice could hit the passenger area of a car at 700 yards.
On one of the police chest cameras there are four distinct, separate shots being fired. I’m guessing it was fairly early in the shooting.
he knew what he wanted to do...
I was talking about the cab driver video, Initially you hear really loud shots and then more muffled ones (or echos?) right after that. Some people were claiming it was proof of a second shooter. Not sure how the cabbies video timeline merges with other one where you see the stage.
For whatever reason, I assumed it was a running dashcam that captured the first shots, lots of pauses after.
