8th turbine in Euphrates Dam on probation (Tabqa Syria)

AL-TABQA- The Euphrates Dam Administration announced that a new advance has been achieved after placing the 8th turbine at the pilot stage of rotation after a month and a half of completing the 3rd turbine repair, and after the dam has been damaged by IS mercenaries. The turbine is expected to produce an electric power of 100 megawatts per hour which is considered an achievement with very limited potential.

HIKMET HISO

The engineer administrative in the Euphrates Dam Ali al-Rawy stated that this turbine has been repaired by the efforts of 250 workers in the dam, and by the support of the general dams’ administration in Rojava Dam (Tishreen Dam), so the dam would produce an electric power of 200 megawatts per hour, and would feed al-Tabqa city and its countryside in addition to supplying electricity to other areas after linking the net with Kobanî, Manbij and Cizîre’s nets at the aim of serving the northern and eastern liberated areas of Syria.

In the same context, the administrative and expert in the dams Hekmat Hesso praised the efforts made by the staff that started voluntarily in spite of all dangers that threatened the workers in the dam, especially the mines of dark forces that intended to ruin the dam in order to affect the citizens’ life under the slogan “Let the Euphrates Dam Work by Itself”.

The engineer Hekmat Hesso added “the work on the square of distribution towers has been delayed because of the scattered mines on the ground and under it in trenches were dug by IS, and these mines; however, resulted in wounding 3 of our specialized workers”.

It is worth mentioning that repairing the 3rd turbine gained the dam self-feeding, and turned on al-Tabqa filtering station within a series of continuous and diligent work.

Pretty amazing that they have been able to bring some of the turbines damaged by ISIS back on line.

Progress is held up because of mines that remain in some parts of the facility. And by the continuing battle in Raqqa. These are large cities that depend upon this facility and the Euphrates River for water and power.

It sounds like the water supply issue has been worked out.

...100 megawatts per hour

Physics units don't match

I worked in power plants all over the world in my 20s and, thankfully, didn’t have to worry about land mines and mercenary raids.

Trump can’t eradicate these ISIS savages quickly enough. There’s nothing those bastards won’t destroy - peace, serenity, normal life, statues, drawings, artwork, libraries, electricity. All they create is misery and sorrow.

Correct.

Problem with non tech writers. Person who wrote the article did not understand electricity.

Absolutely agree.

End them all NOW. Let none escape to rebuild this evil.

The hydroelectric power station is located on the southern end of the dam and contains eight Kaplan turbines. The turbines' rotation speed is 125 RPM, and they can potentially generate 103 MW each.

From the first link. It says at that link they never produced to design capacity.

I’d love to see the author grapple with the concept of a megaWatt-hour. That would really fry his little brain.

Person who wrote the article did not understand electricity.

I thought maybe the the production of electricity was
increasing exponentially, a monumental feat

I suspect those working on the power plant do understand it. It is very hard to imagine getting them working after ISIS shot up the control panels and blasted some of the turbines.

These people are accustomed to dealing with limited resources.

Tenth graders are supposed to master those basic physics notions and know the difference between power and energy. Yet most journalists and talking heads don’t.
Teaching has been dumbeb down for decades by the marxist teaching unions everywhere in the world and we are just seeing the end result of it.

"Person who wrote the article did not understand electricity."

Remember, these things are written by journalists...the least-well-educated college curriculum in existence.

My father-in-law was an EE. He was hired because he understood AC power generation and distribution. His plant used a lot of electrical power. Between his and mine I have a number of slide rules and ancient devices. smile (Simpson 260’s etc) I still have some transmitters and receivers with “valves”. My Collins S-line (32S-3 75S-3) is one of them.

I’m not an engineer, but hold a commercial radio license and an Amateur Extra. Power generation and transmission is not my area but I understand electronics pretty well.

But you are correct in evaluation of journalists and poly/phi folks.

There was a time when sciences were not fuzzy logic. Now, since Glowbull Warming and such nonsense it has become a political tool.

Well, it sounds like the dam is working again for control of the water (critical for agriculture and flood control), and now starting to produce some fraction of the needed electricity for the region.

Getting that dam producing enough electricity will be essential to making Raqqa habitable after liberation. Tap water won’t pump through the city without that electric power.

It has been over 100 days that the main power and water have been out in Raqqa.
