It has been argued that most venereal diseases were contracted by European settlers from Indians, and that syphilis and gonorrhea devastated so much of Europe for the same reason smallpox was so damaging to the Indians: they had no resistance because they had never encountered the diseases before. And the Europeans knew no more about germs or viruses than the Indians did, so any diseases they spread were out of ignorance, not malice. By the way, look at which continent is most ravaged by AIDS today. Hint: it ain't North America.
