I have the same problem. In the heart of summer we get little rain and plenty of sun.
I am thinking of buying a kiddie pool and growing some leaf lettuce in it.
Next spring I will experiment and have fun with it just to see what works.

Excellent comments. I would like to see government policies altered so that small towns could thrive at a certain level of livability. Do they all need enormous high tech hospitals? No. But a small town should have small business, local agriculture, and some level of general practitioner care so that people can live decent lives. Currently, I think the government makes that harder instead of easier.
Small town life is not for everyone, but the US government is making it not for anyone. And so we get more and more Walking Dead towns.

OOoo, great idea. Over good soil, poking some holes in the bottom. :-)

Yep, great place for leaf lettuce and such.
I can get plenty of good black soil from the woods in back of my neighbors place.
Lettuce, peppers, radishes, endless possibilities!
